    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Oakland Raiders cut ties with Aaron Brooks on Thursday, declining to pick up the option on the quarterback's contract after one difficult season.

Brooks, who would have been due a $5 million roster bonus if he had stayed on the roster, failed to win any of his eight starts with the Raiders. The QB, who signed with Oakland after six seasons with the New Orleans Saints, will now look to join his third team in as many years.

Brooks' one season in Oakland got off to a disastrous start when he was sacked seven times in a season-opening 27-0 loss to the San Diego Chargers. He got hurt after fumbling two snaps from center the following week in Baltimore and missed the next seven games with a strained pectoral muscle.

Brooks played better after his return in November, but still was unable to generate a win for his new team. He finished the season with a passer rating of 61.7 after completing 57.3 percent of his passes and throwing eight interceptions and three touchdown passes. He was sacked 26 times in eight games.

The problems on Oakland's offense went much deeper than the quarterback. Receivers Randy Moss and Jerry Porter were disgruntled and unproductive all season, running back LaMont Jordan went down with a season-ending knee injury in the same game Brooks returned from his injury, and the offensive line was one of the worst in the league.

Brooks acknowledged late in the season that he never could have imagined all that went wrong in his one season with the Raiders.

Oakland scored just 168 points in 2006 — the fifth fewest in a 16-game season — and failed to score on offensive touchdown in eight games. Offensive coordinator Tom Walsh, who had been out of the NFL for more than a decade before returning to the Raiders, was demoted late in the season.

Head coach Art Shell was fired following the 2-14 season, the worst in owner Al Davis' more than four decades with the franchise. Lane Kiffin replaced Shell and has overhauled the offensive coaching staff.

With third-string quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo expected to leave as a free agent, Andrew Walter will likely be the only quarterback to return from last season. Walter went 2-6 in place of the injured Brooks last season, struggling with turnovers and accuracy.

Walter threw 13 interceptions, lost nine fumbles and was sacked 46 times. He completed only 53.3 percent of his passes, threw for three touchdowns and had a passer rating of 55.8.

Oakland also has the No. 1 pick in April's draft and could use it to select one of the two quarterbacks in the draft, JaMarcus Russell out of LSU or Brady Quinn of Notre Dame.

At this point, I'm not sure it matters what QB is in a Raiders uniform.

Neither of those guys is worthy of the #1 overall pick. Mark my words, Russell and Quinn will BOTH be busts. You read it here first.

I agree. I think Quinn will be an Joey Harrington type and Russell a Byron Leftwich without the leadership ability.

(Ahem: but I said it first.)

Quinn's overrated. I think Jamarcus Russell is a player, but he won't succeed in Chokeland. How could anybody?

Russell will make Oakland competitive. They are not a guaranteed W anymore.

If they don't start putting together an O-Line the next guy is going to get killed as well.

Quinn got bailed out over and over by his wr. He also failed to come up strong in several big games. If anyone is a bust on the QB front my money is on him.

Russell chalk talk will be key because other wise he is strong in the pocket has a arm like no body in a long long time and is a beast to tackle.

Does anyone think they might go after Carr or Plummer in FA?

If I were the Raiders I would say fuc you to Gallery, made a little package for Schaub which doesn't involve the first rounder and then take Joe Thomas #1.

Are either of those guys free agents? I've only heard both of them mentioned in trades.

Carr would be insane to go to Oakland considering the beating he took in Houston.

Word is that Houston want to shove him out the door and wants Plummer to ride in on his white Horse and save the day or at least run around a lot.

If they don't do that then at least they should spend ALL of their draft picks on offensive players. Their defense will be fine and they can bring in some free agents and UDFAs for competition. 4 of their picks should be on o-linemen. Two tackles a center and a guard. Then take a QB RB and WR with the other picks.

That sounds familiar. I couldn't believe how much he was making when I was looking at the money list.

What is killer is that they had the chance last year to move him out the door and go a different direction but they did not and paid him a ton more money.

One day they will wake up and draft some OL and then the QB will not be a issue. Dam they should hire me!

The Raiders are learning the lesson we learned 4 years ago: Without a line it doesn't matter who's behind center, who's running the ball, or who's cathing the passes. The QB is gonna get killed.

How so? Neither has taken a single snap in the NFL.

Until they do, it's all speculation. Neither of those two guys (Russell and Quinn) have shown me something that makes me believe they deserve to be compared to anyone great. Yet.

Pfft.....your kidding right? Maybe a backup center, the O-line is really young and needs a good solid vetran. What the raiders need to do is draft a QB 1st, joe staley second, if johnnie lee haggins is there at 65 take him and in FA get a vetran LG like ross verba, zach piller, derric dockery, eric stienbech, ruben brown. The raiders are 23.5 million under the cap with the cut of aaron brooks. Lane kiffin was on the Nfl network today and said gallery will be playing the RT spot where he played well. The raiders are also moving to a zone blocking scheme which fits there O-line well.

Both have played really well but the things that seprates them for the others in the last few drafts is potential, leadership, awareness, arm strength, moblity, able to read defenses and they've both been in Nfl style offenses. I no neither has taken a snap yet and some people are saying there potential busts just becuse they might be raiders. I heard the same thing about matt leinart and vince young and look how that turned out.

Typical Raiderfan rhetoric. Your line f'n SUCKS. That's the reason Brooks, Walter, or whoever else got thrown back there was INSTANT TOAST. You've got one good lineman, Sims, that's it. Gallery is a turd, as are the rest.

Shame, because your defense is outstanding. Unfortuately, your offensive line can't simply get in the defender's way to give the qb a moment to try to move your offense and give them some hope.

Give the old pathetic bias towards the raiders a break and have a civil F'kn conversation or dont reply.

Andrew walter and brooks can not read defeses and they are not field genrals. These guys are both terrible. The O-line does not suck. The guy who played RT "langston walker" sucks *** yes and Gallery sucks on the left side yes. The raiders have a good RG and solid center but need a new LT and proven vet to play LG. as ive stated the raiders are 23.5 million and under the cap so we can get a vetran guard and draft a LT like joe staley in the second.
