Oakland Raiders (2-2)1:15 p.m. Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium

The Raiders have been a joke since losing Super Bowl XXXVII at Qualcomm Stadium in January 2003, going 15-49 the past four seasons, including 9-23 in two seasons (2004-05) under Norv Turner. But with new coach Lane Kiffin in charge, Oakland split its first four games to grab a share of first place in the AFC West, then rested last weekend while Denver and Kansas City lost, giving the Raiders sole possession of the division lead for the first time since the final game of 2002.One cautionary note, though: The Raiders haven't played a decent team yet. They lost to the Lions and Broncos before beating the Browns and Dolphins. The combined record of those teams: 7-13. And, while the Raiders lead the league in rushing with an average of 194 yards a game, their last three opponents rank 30th, 31st and 32nd in rushing defense. Still, there's no question the Raiders are improved offensively. Oakland's offense has scored 11 TDs, only one fewer than its total for 2006. The defense hasn't been as strong as it was last year, however. The Raiders rank 26th against the run, 29th against the pass and 24th in points allowed.
    – JAY POSNER
    Familiar faces
In addition to Morrison, offensive line coach Tom Cable has ties to SDSU; he was a graduate assistant there in 1989. Secondary coach Darren Perry was with the Chargers in training camp in 1999. Special teams coordinator Brian Schneider was born in San Diego and tight ends coach Kelly Skipper is from Brawley.
    Injury report
Coming off last week's bye, just two players missed practice Monday – quarterback Josh McCown (broken toe) and running back LaMont Jordan (back). McCown won't play, while Jordan's status appears questionable at best. Three backups should return after missing recent games – linebackers Isaiah Ekejiuba (foot) and Robert Thomas (hamstring), and fullback Oren O'Neal (hamstring).
    Last meeting
The Chargers were held to a season-low 260 yards but rallied for a 21-14 victory on Nov. 26, 2006, at Qualcomm Stadium. Oakland led 14-7 and was driving for another TD when Shaun Phillips tipped a pass and Quentin Jammer intercepted. The Chargers scored two TDs in the final 10 minutes, with LaDainian Tomlinson throwing a 19-yard pass to Antonio Gates with 9:46 left and scoring the winner on a 10-yard run with 3:39 left.
    Three players to watch
Daunte Culpepper: Threw just 12 passes in his only start this season, but two went for touchdowns and he also ran for three scores. Certainly not the same QB who averaged almost 300 yards a game in 2004 when he threw for 39 TDs. The year before he threw for 370 yards and four TDs in his only career game vs. the Chargers.
Dominic Rhodes: Leading rusher LaMont Jordan is ailing, which means Rhodes is eligible to make his Raiders debut at a good time. He's coming off a four-game suspension after pleading guilty to reckless driving. The last time Rhodes played in a meaningful game, he rushed for 113 yards in the Colts' Super Bowl victory.
Kirk Morrison: Former San Diego State star returns after being named AFC Defensive Player of the Month for September. He had three interceptions, tying him for the AFC lead with several others, including teammate Thomas Howard and the Chargers' Marlon McCree. Morrison has been credited with a team-high 35 tackles.
    Series history
For the first time, the Chargers have won seven straight games against the Raiders and can tie a franchise record by winning eight in a row against the same opponent. Oakland leads the overall series 55-38-2, including 29-17-1 in San Diego. But the Chargers have won the last four at Qualcomm Stadium.
    Did you know?
Since beating the Chargers in overtime on Sept. 28, 2003, the Raiders have lost 15 straight games against AFC West opponents and 22 of their last 23. (The only victory came by one point at Denver on Nov. 28, 2004.) Already this year, however, the Raiders ended an 11-game overall losing streak and a 12-game road losing streak.
    Did you hear?
“If we don't keep playing well, you won't remember that. Nobody will. Being in first place right now means absolutely nothing.”
    – Raiders rookie coach Lane Kiffin, on his team leading the AFC West
    Key stat
The Raiders lead the league with a 5.3-yard average per carry and 194 yards rushing per game. But the defense has allowed the same average per carry, which ranks next-to-last in the league ahead of only Cincinnati.

I'd say it means that they've improved from a 2-14 team to a 5-11 (6-10 at best) team!!

San Diego has beaten Bill Callahan once, Turner four times and Art Shell twice in that streak. The common theme has been the Chargers' ability to dominate with the running game. With Marty Schottenheimer as coach, San Diego outgained Oakland 1,238-507 on the ground :bolt:
