By Jay Paris

SAN DIEGO ---- The Philip Rivers era will not start quietly for the Chargers.

The Chargers are to open the season Sept. 11 on the road against their arch-rival, the Oakland Raiders, in the second game of a "Monday Night Football" doubleheader on ESPN. Not only will the game christen the Chargers' year, but it's expected to be Rivers' first NFL start at quarterback.

Rivers is the heir apparent to the job left open when Drew Brees recently exited for the New Orleans Saints as a free agent. Rivers, who has thrown 30 NFL passes, has waited patiently two seasons for his chance.
