We're continuing our periodic AFC West position rankings with the best kickers and punters:

    1. Shane Lechler, Oakland, and Mike Scifres, San Diego: This will likely get Oakland and San Diego fans heated as both groups think the punter on their respective teams is the best in the NFL. Neither fan base is wrong. I truly believe Lechler and Scifres are tied for being the best punter in the NFL. Lechler has the big leg and consistency. Scifres has a big leg and great touch. His work against the Colts in the playoffs was mind-blowing.

    3. Sebastian Janikowski, Oakland: Janikowski isn't perfect and he misses a lot of makeable kicks. But he has strong leg and he is one of the better kickers in the league.

    4. Nate Kaeding, San Diego: Kaeding is an underrated kicker. He is consistent and should have a long career ahead of him.

    5. Dustin Colquitt, Kansas City: This is a deep list. Colquitt is a top-level punter when healthy. He became famous when Kansas City coach Todd Haley cited him when asked what the new coach liked about the team he was inheriting.

    6. Brett Kern, Denver: There is a big drop-off from No. 5 to No. 6 on this list. But Kern has a chance. He has a strong leg and he was decent as a rookie last season.

Can't say I disagree for the most part but Scifres has the touch, which helps his team more than having just the leg. Scifres is #1, not tied with Lechler. Lechler is actually less consistent and he has to punt a lot more often.

Scifres is about as good as it gets. I'm not sold on Keading.

Keading had a great rookie season up to that missed field goal in the playoffs. Since then, he's seemed to have regressed.

Scifres is as good as I've ever seen, and his career statistics have proven it so far.

I don't know...I kinda liked the 57 yarder he drilled against Tampa last season.

He has his moments, but he is inconsistent.
Example: He missed a FG in the Pittsburgh game last season that was very makable and much needed... knowing it was going to be a low scoring game.
Times like that seem to work against him.

If you look at Nate's stats, though, they show that he HASN'T regressed.

The only PK in Chargers' history that deserves mention in the same sentence with Nate is John Carney.

His short kickoffs are the only thing I dislike about Nate.

I'm sure his stats do look good but I've seen him miss too many much needed FGs. Especially when you're getting paid well, you have to make the FGs in low scoring games and when the pressure is on.

I'm not saying I dislike Keading but he needs to make the ones that count the most.

I agree .... most of the time he's accurate at a range that is acceptable. He's not perfect, but he has also been put into some pretty untenable situations by the coaching staff.

As for Scifres ... I'll take him every day of the week & twice on Sundays.

He doesn't need Kassim "I'm taking up roster space" Osgood to make him good.

Lechler punted almost 40 more times than Scifres did last year.

    It's 51 to 90.

It's no wonder our boy was so fresh down the stretch.

    Holy shiiit Oakland sucks.

Isn't that a result of the directional kick offs? Not sure myself :icon_shrug:

Nate just makes me nervous for someone who hardly misses. Everytime the game is on the line I practically pass out from holding my breath... I want to trust him and he is a great great guy but until he proves to be clutch under fire I will worry.

In his defense tho, the Jets game in the rain his plant foot slipped - not much you can do about that as a kicker.

    Eggzactly.

Missed 40 yarders in the playoffs also is a griping point.

However, overall he is pretty solid and I think is getting more clutch as he matures. Top 5 kicker.

I was at that game and it was colder than hell and pretty windy. I have heard it said that Reed has mastered that end of the stadium (the open end), and it gives him an edge against the other team's kicker.
