Sad for him because all in all the good outweighs the bad, but I guess that is what happens when the bad thing happens to cost your team a potential superbowl place.

Lee Evans got released, probably becaue he droppped the game winning TD, now Cundiff out too.

They have a younger, cheaper kicker who has been performing exceptionally well over the preseason, and in his college career. No surprise they cut Cundiff.

The Ravens can cut a PK that screws up in the playoffs ONCE but the Chargers can't do it after a PK has multiple misses?

No thanks, we already have two basket case kickers on our roster.

But what the hell... I would take a chance on him.

Someone's going to get a great #NFL kicker; Billy Cundiff was 53/59/90% over past 2 yrs inside 50; 12/13/92% in postseason for #Ravens.

Report: Neil Rackers cut by Redskins

Posted by Josh Alper on August 27, 2012, 9:12 AM EDT
    AP
Teams are drawing a line after the 75th player on their roster on Monday and it appears thatNeil Rackers has wound up on the wrong side of it.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the veteran kicker has been cut loose by the Redskins, which means that Graham Ganowas able to hold off a training camp challenge to his job in Washington. Rackers signed with the Redskins in April and was given a good chance of winning the job at that point in time, but Gano showed the Redskins staff something more to their liking.

Rackers missed one of the two field goals he tried in the preseason, which is two more attempts than Gano received in the first three games. Gano got touchbacks on 2-of-6 kickoffs while Rackers had one in four tries, but it doesn’t seem like games separated the two kickers all that much. Gano’s younger leg and/or Rackers not making it clear he was the better choice likely played a role in this one.

The Redskins could still look to replace Gano before the start of the season as other kickers shake loose in the coming days. Rackers could also get a look elsewhere, perhaps back in Houston where Rackers’ presumed replacement — fifth-round pickRandy Bullock — was placed on injured reserve over the weekend.

And no I don't want him either.

Nick Folk beats out Josh Brown for Jets kicking job

Posted by Darin Gantt on August 27, 2012, 10:30 AM EDT

    AP
Given that it’s the only way the Jets can score points, the kicking battle is a pretty big deal.

That competition has now been settled, asJosh Brown was told this morning he was released, according to Manish Mehta of theNew York Daily News.

“Best of luck to the 2012 Jets…” Brown tweeted. “Thanks for one of the most memorable camps in 10 yrs. GREAT GROUP OF GUYS!!”

That means Nick Folk will keep his job, and be responsible for all the points the Jets put on the board, since they haven’t scored a touchdown yet this preseason.

    Panthers cut Olindo Mare

Posted by Michael David Smith on August 27, 2012, 2:16 PM EDT

    AP
A year after signing in Carolina, Olindo Mare is leaving.

The Panthers have released Mare today, a league source tells PFT.

Shortly after last year’s lockout ended, Mare signed a four-year, $12 million contract with the Panthers. But he had a mediocre season in Carolina in 2011, missing both of his field goal attempts of 50-plus yards.

The decision to cut Mare leaves Justin Medlock as the only kicker on the Panthers’ roster. It’s not known yet whether the Panthers have settled on Medlock as their kicker for Week One, or whether they’ll consider bringing in another kicker. But their kicker won’t be Mare.

I'm guessing that Josh Brown was pushed out the door, not so much for his performance this preseason,
as his inexcusably horrible judgement, thinking the jerks in his locker room were a "GREAT GROUP OF GUYS!!"

    You are correct.

Redskins boot another kicker, make room for Billy Cundiff

Posted by Darin Gantt on August 28, 2012, 9:02 AM EDT

    AP
Billy Cundiff didn’t have to wait long to find work, and he doesn’t have to move far.

After being released by the Ravens this week, Cundiff is signing with the Redskins, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Redskins released Neil Rackersyesterday, apparently electing to go withGraham Gano.

But that didn’t last long, as they viewed Cundiff as an upgrade.

He probably is, but Cundiff could never escape the shadow of his AFC Championship Game miss with the Ravens, losing his job to rookie Justin Tucker.

So Gano now joins Rackers again, but instead of in the Redskins locker room, they’ll be part of the Tuesday workout crew (along with Olindo Mare, Josh Brown and others) whenever teams get tired of their current kickers. They should get a bus, and go from city to city like a traveling kicker circus. As long as they leave Crazy Joe Davola at home.

Update: 9:07 a.m. ET: ESPN 980 talked to Gano, who confirmed he’s been released.

Are ANY of these guys players we'd want over Kaeding in a serious way? Kaeding already basically held off Novak who wasn't that good except he didn't have nasty playoff misses on his record. Are any of the released guys a marked improvement over what we have in kaeding in terms of regular season and/or playoffs?

I don't think any of these guys are an upgrade. Are there any kickers in the league that just scream clear-cut upgrade to Kaeding? Presently no one really jumps out to me as wildly better.

    Agree whole heartedly

If someone gets released who is unarguably better than Kaeding then cut him immediately. If it's going to be a marginal improvement if that, why bother?
