Ok after reading this article today in the SDUT about LT

    http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/jan/03/if-history-repeats-today-could-be-lts-swan-song/

I have been pondering what which direction we should go next year. I do not see anyone in the draft that jumps out at RB. Even if we draft one then we still need a vet presence at RB. Remember Sproles return is also in question. We always roll the dice when drafting and we can not rely on the rookie to replace LT. I have been looking around the league and I am intrigued with what the Carolina Panthers have. I have heard that one of them will not be back next season. I wonder what it would take to get DeAngelo Williams or Johnathan Stewert from them. I am not sure what their contracts look like either. Does anyone have any other ideas about which direction we could go?

Based on this season, no-one's going to pay him feature back money.
This makes a second re-negotiation possible.
There is no pride at stake after last year's reworking of the contract so I hope they can get something done, possibly based around production.

No-one denys that he's lost a step, however, he knows the offense and knows how to run, catch, block and is an excellent role model to have in the locker room.
This veteran leadership is often overlooked when comparing stats.
If anyone can figure out a way of maximising his remaining talents it is Norv.
I hope he's with us for another couple of years while he grooms his (as yet unknown) successor.

Legarrette Blount could be a standalone rookie back!

AJ Smith has good eyes for talent so if he's smart he'll draft legarrette!

Yeah I've been saying this for months now. LT hardly deserves a starting position in the NFL anymore, he's not even in the top 35 in terms of RB efficiency.

Some people around here are living in the clouds and don't seem to think it matters because Philip Rivers is going to put up a 158.3 passer rating every week next year, but we need a damn running game.

Draft 2 RB's. Best and Blount.

I definitely don't think that we want to pay a running back a big money contract in this offense...We are moving the ball just fine and scoring with a 3.3 YPC....that being said, what we will need is a runningback who can get the ball into the endzone. It helps a lot when we have a prolific scorer to keep the defenses guessing and you have to respect a guy like we've had in LT who has now had double digit TDs for almost a decade straight.

If we do just outright release LT, Blount might not be a horrible option if we can grab him late in the second round. No way in hell do we invest in a runningback with our 1st rounder. The issue with Blount is character....he acted as insane as I've ever seen a player at the end of that Boise game...and guys just don't change character overnight (see Lawrence Phillips)...especially guys who are on their best behavior right now because contract money and their future is on the line.

I think we are going to wait and see what happens with the salary cap after the year....If we are uncapped, the Spanoses might just keep LT out of loyalty...maybe with a renegotiated deal again.....If not, we are likely to see if we can come to another compromise.

Either way, we still need to look for a 3rd back in the draft or FA.....I'm wondering if a guy like Ahmad Bradshaw of the NYG might be available. LT will still give us value as a mentor for a young back, a part time back....and a goal line threat.

LT is great at what we need, scoring TDs in short-yardage situations, but he is not worth the money he is getting now.

And AJ WILL take a look at Blount, I guarantee it. He did not let character issues shy him away from Merriman, Castillo, Siler, etc.

good. LT would be a good goaline specialist for less money. Besides he isn't gonna get much more from anyone else will he? I think he still has it though, but only with an oline that can block really well. Our oline just hasn't helped him out this year and like you said. For the money he isn't what we need. I say get Sproles back. Then get blount as a power back!

Sorry Fouts, but you are too late; I already sent AJ a very persuasive, articulate letter that will surely convince him to draft Blount in 2010. Have a read:

I would draft Blount...but not any earlier than late in the second round.

Experts have him going in the 5th or 6th round due to the character issues.

I suspect you guys are selling LT too short, too fast. There isn't much else out there where we are apt to draft early and later on they will all be crap shoots. Unfortunately, we missed our chance at a franchise type back by not transitioning or franchising Michael Turner. I may sound like a broken record, but we need to keep LT and focus on fat boys. We are in that position where we can simply draft the best athlete available, preferably a fat dude. LT is still a very, very servicable back. None of his injuries have been catastrophic. He should have at least one more season with us to show he isn't finished, and to do otherwise would be a major mistake. In the absence of a bonafide early round running back from our drafting position, an incentive structured contract for LT is a very wise move.

Blount sounds like Raiders material...our roster does not have a "Thug-Back" position, so he is not a good fit here. Someone else can enjoy dealing with the Personal Foul penalties, suspensions and generally immature and boneheaded behavior.

He's really changed since the incident and gotten his act together. Other ppl that had character issues like Percy Harvin were justified... It wouldn't be a bad idea if we draft him low bc we don't have to pay him that much. If Harvin is worth the risk blount is as he has just as much potential...
