BALTIMORE – Nate Kaeding kicked the longest field goal of his professional career, 54 yards. Mike Scifres equaled the longest punt of his professional career, 71 yards.

A great day for the Chargers' specialists, right?

    Uh, not exactly.
Kaeding also missed a 40-yard field goal yesterday that would have given the Chargers a nine-point lead in the third quarter. And Scifres bungled a snap that prevented Kaeding from attempting a 52-yard kick that would have given the Chargers a similar lead midway through the final quarter.

Throw in a rare bad snap from veteran long snapper David Binn and it was not the best of days for San Diego's normally reliable trinity.

None of the three players offered any excuses, and they hardly were alone yesterday in making mistakes. But in the wake of San Diego's heartbreaking 16-13 loss to Baltimore, every error was magnified.

All these missed opportunities just can't happen if you want to win.
