Report: Blue Angel Crash in S.C. Kills 1

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) -- A Navy F-18 Blue Angel plane crashed during an air show Saturday, according to televised reports. The county coroner's office said one person was killed.

Witnesses said the planes were flying in formation during the show at a Marine air base, and then one dropped down below the trees and apparently crashed.

"The next thing I seen was just a big black cloud of smoke," Gerald Popp, who lives nearby, told CNN.

At the Blue Angels command headquarters at Pensacola Naval Air Station the petty officer duty said he "had no comment at this time."

A woman who answered the phone at the county coroner's office said one person died in the crash. It was not immediately clear who it was.

More than 100,000 were expected to attend the air show, and the Blue Angels were the main attraction. The elite aerial-demonstration team, which is based at Pensacola Naval Air Station, recently celebrated its 60th anniversary.

Beaufort is about 35 miles northwest of Hilton Head.

That must have been awful for the spectators to witness:icon_sad:

Way back in the day when Miramar NAS was still Fightertown USA, I used to love going to the big air shows, and of course the Blue Angels were the top attraction. One time No. 5 came outta NOWHERE, flying at what seemed like 50 feet above the ground, and literally scared the piss out of those of us at the eastern end of the field, while No. 6 was doing the same to the folks at the other end. Then they came within what looked like a cat's whisker of colliding right over us, which caused a lot of screaming.......all part of the thrills, of course.

I salute the brave and daring men who risk their lives every time they get behind the controls of those planes, not just to please the crowd, but to display the mighty U.S. military at its best.

I helped build those Jets! They were talking about upgrading the Blues from A and B Models to C and D models. Those Blues are getting old!

It is looking like the Pilot clipped some trees, but the investigation continues.

    RIP#6

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
    And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

ulp...........damn, I hate it when stuff gets in my eyes and my throat closes up.........

That happens to be one of my all-time favorite poems. I remember President Reagan quoting from it when the space shuttle Challenger exploded back in '86, and how comforting that was. Thanks for sharing it, H8er.
