Report: Sproles won't be back on one-year deal

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on February 23, 2010 5:04 PM ET
It's starting to look like the Chargers will have two players to replace in their backfield.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Chargers won't retain Darren Sproles on a one-year contract. (Sproles was due $7.3 million as a restricted free agent, 110% of what he made last year as the team's franchise player.)

San Diego would like to re-sign Sproles to a long-term deal, but they only see him as a complementary part. At least one more team should see him as much more. Expect him to hit the open market.

This news isn't particularly good for LaDainian Tomlinson or Brian Westbrook. Both veterans look like third-down backs now and may have to wait in line behind Sproles to get a deal done.

Because of Sproles' age and ascendant ability, we'd guess that he will make more than Westbrook and Tomlinson combined in 2010. Fortunes change brutally fast at running back.

    No real surprise here.

Sproles wants closer to home or enough money to make being away worthwhile.

I said elsewhere we'd might wind up drafting two backs.

I am totally down with that. I'd love to see Tolbert carrying the rock more frequently.

I agree, give the starting job to Tolbert, draft a young guy (of course Tolbert is young as well), to go along with Tolbert. I still say we need Sproles coming out of the backfield.

so him + another quicker back + (very late/UDFA) another power back = success

If Sproles is gone who will return kicks? Is there any Sproles-like returners in the draft? :icon_shrug:

I agree. Sign Chester Taylor and draft Blount in the 3rd while concentrating on Defense in the 1st 2 rounds

You mean a guy who can be ranked #40 in the NFL for kick return average (24.1 per kick)? Or maybe a guy who is ranked #44 in punt returns (7.0 per punt)?

I think finding a guy who can return kicks like Sproles does, shouldn't be too difficult

 OK maybe I should have rephrased that. Who are the top kick returners in the draft?

LOL, I have no idea. I just know Sproles #'s were no where near at the level a lot of people like to think they were

Arenas is one & is a decent CB as well.

LaMarcus Coker is a DivII RB who can fly (may run in the 4.2's, easily low 4.3's) & returns kicks. I watched him for a couple of games at Hampton. Probably last until the 7th, maybe even UDFA.

I like a combination of dwyer, or matthews or dixon to replace ladanian. And either joe mcnight or the mississippi scat back to replace sproles. And I do think we might have a better rb situation.
But we'd have to use the first two picks to do this. and if we trade cro we'll then have to find another good cb. If we could trade cro for a early to middle 2nd rounder that would help alot.
