Report: Tom Cable unlikely to return to Raiders

Posted by Michael David Smith on January 2, 2011, 12:43 PM EST

By the recent standards of the Oakland Raiders, head coach Tom Cable has made real progress this season: The Raiders are 7-8 this year after winning no more than five games in any of the last seven seasons.

But apparently that progress isn’t enough.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported on Sunday NFL Countdown that Cable is unlikely to return as Raiders head coach in 2011.

The Raiders called Schefter a “false rumor monger” when he reported that they would fire Art Shell after the 2006 season — and then they proceeded to fire Art Shell after the 2006 season.

So don’t be surprised if the Raiders deny this report as well. And then don’t be surprised if they backtrack on their denial.

Who would want to work in that madhouse?

Any random interest in having Cable as our OL coach?

This team is getting better and better. All those first round draft picks are doing them well. I can't see any reason as to why they would fire Cable. The team seems to play hard for the guy. Could be that they want a big name head coach? A reunion of some sorts?

    Wow.
So the Raiders just finished sweeping the entire AFC West (though, honestly, how they can do that and not be in first place is beyond me. Apparently they can only beat the teams in this division) and have improved to 8-8, the closest thing they've had to a winning season in years, and Al is firing his head coach.

    Bravo, Al, bravo.

I'd like to see him or Tony Sporano brought in as the OL coach to make these guys nut up

This is a dumb report. To fire a guy who has the team blowing out the divison champs. Give the guy a extension.

    Raiders complete AFC West sweep

Posted by Mike Florio on January 2, 2011, 4:18 PM EST
They’re not going to the playoffs and their head coach reportedly will be fired, but the Raiders can at least lay claim to going undefeated in the AFC West after beating the Chiefs in Kansas City to close out the season, 31-10.

And if the Raiders had been a little better record than 2-8 out of the division, they may have made it to the postseason.

As it stands, Oakland is the first team to go 6-0 in its division and not make it to the playoffs (thanks to our friends at the Elias Sports Bureau). The Chiefs, meanwhile, went 2-4 in the division — and they likely will be the No. 4 seed, if the Colts win against the Titans today.

If that’s how it plays out, the Chiefs will host the Ravens and the Colts and Jets will have a first-round rematch of the 2009 AFC title game in Indy.

For the Chiefs, it was their first loss at home, and it came in the wake of reports that offensive coordinator Charlie Weis will be leaving the team to take the same job at the University of Florida.

Win against Chiefs not expected to save Cable in Oakland

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 2, 2011, 6:33 PM EST

Despite Oakland’s undefeated AFC West run, the signs continue to point towards Tom Cable losing his head coaching job.

Longtime Bay Area writer Nancy Gay writes that the “word from Alameda” is that the Raiders will not pick up Tom Cable’s option for next year. The Raiders may not announce anything until January 17, when Cable’s contract runs out.

Earlier in the day, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Cable was unlikely to return to the Raiders.

We think that Cable has overachieved to make the Raiders 8-8 and his team clearly plays hard for him. Owner Al Davis probably sees the Raiders as a team that should have made the playoffs.

Although this is a plus for the rest of the AFC West, this move makes absolutely no sense. If they actually go through with this, it is for sure time that they put Al in a home.

Better yet, just keep him. Let them self destruct.
