This is hot off the radio, about 3 minutes ago:

The Padre fired Merv Rettenmund and hired former Padre Wally Joiner as the Batting Coach. Wow.

I dunno how much you can blame the consistently crappy hitting on Rettenmund. BUT I do really like Wally a lot, he was prly my favorite Padre aside from Tony.

It's official, from the Padres website:

Padres name Wally Joyner hitting coach, replacing Merv Rettenmund

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres announced today that the club has named Wally Joyner Hitting Coach, replacing Merv Rettenmund. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcement.

Joyner, 45, has previously served as the Padres Minor League Hitting Instructor (2003) and as a Special Instructor during Spring Training (2004-2007). He was a Special Assistant to General Manager Kevin Towers in 2002.

Joyner had a career Major League Batting average of .289 (2,060-for-7127) with 409 doubles, 26 triples, 204 home runs, 1,106 RBI, 973 runs, 833 walks and 60 steals over parts of 16 seasons in 2,033 games with California/Anaheim (1986-1992, 2001), Kansas City (1992-1995), San Diego (1996-1999) and Atlanta (2000).

Rettenmund, 64, was named the Padres Hitting Coach on June 15, 2006. He had also held the same position with the Padres from 1991-1999.
