Rivers contract talks may heat up

    By Kevin Acee
    Union-Tribune Staff Writer
    9:53 p.m. August 5, 2009

SAN DIEGO – Talks on a new contract for Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, while considered inevitable for months, have not begun.

    That may soon change.

Both sides have long intimated that nothing would get done with Rivers until Eli Manning's numbers in New York were settled.

Wednesday, that happened as Manning and the Giants agreed on a six-year extension worth $97.5 million, with $35 million in virtually guaranteed money.

With Ben Roethlisberger having signed an eight-year, $102 million ($36 million guaranteed) contract last year, Rivers is the last QB from the 2004 first-round draft class yet to get a new deal.

Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said Wednesday, “We don't discuss contracts. If we have anything regarding Philip, we'll let you know immediately.”

But the situation definitely is on Smith's mind.

Smith has repeatedly said how highly he thinks of Rivers and that he intends for him to be the Chargers quarterback long-term. In January, Smith said the Chargers would begin negotiating with Rivers, whose contract expires after this season. Smith also said the team is prepared to use the franchise tag in 2010 if no deal is reached.

So Rivers will be here. For how long and at what price will depend on the two sides.

The Chargers will contend that Rivers doesn't have the Super Bowl hardware both Roethlisberger and Manning possess. Rivers' agent will likely point out that Rivers' numbers are better than both those quarterbacks', as well as superior to most quarterbacks ever in their first three seasons as a starter.

    Rivers' representative declined comment.

    Night at the Q

Shawne Merriman worked the crowd. There were chants of “LT, LT.” Players preened and had a little extra pep in everything they did.

About 13,000 fans showed up at Qualcomm Stadium Wednesday night for the Chargers' first open practice of training camp.

FanFest at Qualcomm is 10 a.m. Saturday. The final open practice is 7 p.m. Wednesday.

    Defense shines

Rivers was intercepted three times Wednesday night (by Quentin Jammer, Antonio Cromartie and Shaun Phillips). That was just the start of a night that mostly belonged to the defense.

“The best thing for us is to go against our defense,” Norv Turner said. “We're a good defensive football team.”

    Injury updates

Jyles Tucker got reps with the first team as Shawne Merriman sat out the morning practice. Merriman returned for the night practice.

Jamal Williams worked Wednesday night after resting the previous two practices.

    – First-round pick Larry English missed both practices Wednesday with a tight hamstring.

    – Receiver Buster Davis sat out a fourth straight practice in the morning due to a balky quadriceps. He returned for the evening session.

If a mediocre, lucky QB can get the contract that ECry got, what will a real QB get?

If Rivers signs before we win the SB it will be lower, if he signs after we win the SB it will be higher... :icon_toast:

I'd like to see Rivers get locked up to the Bolt's long term, like the rest of his career.
