The Chargers rested quarterback Philip Rivers and tight end Antonio Gates in their third preseason game.

That's not the plan for the fourth.

The veterans are expected to play Thursday in San Francsico against the 49ers after seeing some rest against the Vikings last week.

The rationale in Rivers' case, coach Norv Turner said, was to see backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst respond to the opportunity to start. The opportunity coincided with three starters playing together for the first time on the offensive line.

Turner said Rivers has "got to play sometime."

It's the final preseason game before the Sept. 10 opener in Oakland.

Left guard Tyronne Green returned to practice Sunday. Center Nick Hardwick continues to make progress from a concussion suffered last week, and left tackle Jared Gaither has been working on the side.

On Monday, Gaither reached the one month mark since his last practice, putting in just one full day of field work since the start of training camp. He's missed three games, 19 practices and about as many walk-throughs over that span.

The Vikings sacked Whitehurst five times in two-plus quarters.

Rookie Michael Harris started at left tackle, veteran Rex Hadnot at left guard and rookie Dave Molk at center.

"They just need to play together," Turner said this week. "They need to transfer the things that you do in practice into a preseason game, and that was as severe a test as you could have: on the road, crowd noise, with ... outstanding pass rushers on the defensive front. It was a blitz fest. Every down was some form of blitz."

I think this is a smart move. Rivers will likely end up playing against backups, resulting in him having a better opportunity to stay upright, even if his line ends up being somewhat patchwork.

    *Yawn*

I'll be watching South Carolina vs. Aaron Rodger's little brother on ESPN.

Wake me up when the pre-season is over.
