    Rivers surprisingly polished

    UNION-TRIBUNE
    November 6, 2006

    JOHN R. MCCUTCHEN / Union-Tribune

Philip Rivers is a picture of poise in the pocket as he surveys the field in the second quarter.

Philip Rivers is the new toy that has lost its novelty. We know what he is. We know what he does. And we have already begun to take him for granted.
Two months ago, the Chargers' new quarterback was a mystery: a big package of unwrapped possibilities. Today, he is as methodical as a metronome. If you didn't know better, you'd swear the aw-shucks arm from Athens, Ala., had been playing pro football for eight years instead of eight weeks.

“I thought there would be a lot of things happen early in the season that would have my head turned,” Rivers said yesterday after the Chargers' 32-25 victory over the Cleveland Browns. “Obviously, there have been a ton of mistakes. I'm learning every week. But for the most part, I haven't been surprised. I haven't been shocked.”

The surprise has been how seamlessly he has made the transition from backing up Drew Brees to taking charge on Sunday afternoons. The shock has been how efficiently he has played after two seasons of token appearances.

His statistics are almost sacrilegious. Halfway through his first season as an NFL starter, Rivers has completed 66.4 percent of his passes, with only three interceptions among 238 attempts.

Those are the numbers. Here is the news flash: Neither John Elway nor Dan Marino were ever that accurate in any season as a professional passer. Neither one. Not even once.

You could have knocked me over with a decimal point on that one. Rivers is not yet ready to have a bust carved for Canton, but he has already shed Brees' shadow, rewarded the confidence of General Manager A.J. Smith and proved that even when you take them one word at a time, you can still turn a sound bite into a speech............CLICK ON LINK FOR MORE BUT THE PROPHET TOLD YOU SUCKA'S....RIVERS IS THE CHOSEN ONE !!! :bolt: :icon_banana:

Rivers is showing his "IT" factor that some saw early on and why the decision to see Brees leave was a no-brainer.

The brother is the real deal.

When you consider the son of a football coach asks his college coach if it is OK to get married to his high school sweetheart, you have to wonder ? :icon_wtf:

If this ahh-shucks Mayberry southern hillbilly boy has not broken out the jug and gone on midnight booze cruises yet and has shown some resolve (BALLS) in comeback play and not to mention an insane 4th qtr QBR, you have to sit up and say "yeah mother fugger" :icon_banana: :icon_beerbang: :nana_rock: :rockout: :icon_banana:

    Yes.

It is a sign of respect for the "Moled One" and a slightly subliminal message to embrace the "Chosen One" through subtle mind control techniques. Crude but effective.

The proof? Concudan is now swinging off Rivers jock like a tree monkey  :icon_mrgreen:

The more protection the o-line gives Rivers the more Rivers is gonna hit with lazer rocket passes to charger receivers.. The more the o-line opens up a crack the quicker ladanian will get to the hall of fame.

Just wait until Rivers leads the Chargers into Denver and spanks the donks royally on national TV.

Then many who still do not believe will be faced with undeniable truth that he is THE ONE !!! :bolt:

Pretty nice but either Elway or Marino played in the time of now where DB's cant lay a finger on WR's. I still think Rivers would do well if that were still the case.

Somehow, I can't picture Conc - in his Tarzan shorty shorts - doing this. This visual is less than appealing.

    Spreading the wealth

Philip Rivers' 158 completions this season have been spread among nine players. He even passed to all nine in one game, and in four games he has shared the passes among seven receivers.
“When you have big-play guys who everyone knows about and are aware of, it opens stuff up for other guys,” Rivers said.

The Chargers are one of just three teams with four players with at least 27 receptions. Their four are LaDainian Tomlinson (38), Antonio Gates (34), Eric Parker (29) and Keenan McCardell (27).

    Nuts 'n' Bolts

Roman Oben has been working at both right and left tackle and will be used as a reserve when he is activated next week.

RIVERS IN FLOW: Lewis offered this assessment of San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers, who is 158-for-238 passing for 1,747 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions with a 96.7 passer rating. He is in his first season as a starter, replacing Drew Brees, who signed with New Orleans as a free agent.

"Rivers has come in and played football without forcing the football," Lewis said. "He's been able to run their offense. I think he's been back as an apprentice for a couple years. He's gotten an opportunity to drive the car now. He likes those keys. And he's got some pretty good set of tires around him that make things go pretty good."
