Chargers coach Norv Turner said Friday he had not entirely made up his mind, but he seemed sure enough that he would keep his starting quarterback from the Edward Jones Dome turf and the Rams' pursuing defenders.

The theme of the Chargers' training camp has been health. The club has numerous stars coming off surgeries, and it is doing everything it can to remain healthy into the postseason after being done in by injuries in last season's AFC Championship Game. Turner and the training staff have been especially cautious easing players back into practice.

Rivers tore the ACL in his right knee in January and had surgery to reconstruct the ligament later that month. He is moving well and has missed just one practice since minicamp. But he is wearing a brace on the knee, and the Chargers would much prefer he is rested and healthy for the Sept. 7 season opener.

Turner said all along he would play his starters only sparingly against the Rams. Not playing Rivers would mean more time for Billy Volek, who is expected to start, and Charlie Whitehurst. It could also mean unexpected playing time for Casey Bramlet.
