Coordinator Ron Rivera is trying to see what works with some of the wrinkles he's added to the Chargers defense.

The first team drills of camp saw a lot of mixing and matching on the defensive line, with Jamal Williams even playing in the nickel package and plenty of other different pairings.

"We're doing some neat stuff," Luis Castillo said.

Gotta say that rookie safety Kevin Ellison looked good, and I heard good reports about him. He seems up to speed, meaning those three days of holding out must not have hurt him. It is his intelligence and instincts that make the Chargers think they got a steal with the 189th pick.

Clinton Hart was the starter at strong safety in the base package. Steve Gregory worked with the first team in the nickel package.

First-rounder Larry English, who agreed to terms on a five-year contract today, was not at practice. Details are still being worked out on the deal.

Norv Turner said he hadn't heard about the signing ("I've been out here coaching") but that if it was true, "It's great to get him in here. He can use every rep he can get."

One thing you notice about this coaching staff is the amount of detail they impart to players.

Two practices today. Sunday's only practice will be the first in full pads.
