    From Acee's mailbag:

" I hate to say it, but I think Nick Hardwick is the 2008 version of Eric Parker. Don't be surprised if they put him on IR.

    Mark / Chula Vista

    Answer

    I won't be surprised either.

    Kevin Acee"

Damn, this is not good.

More likely, he goes on the PUP list which makes him ineligeable for the first 6 games and then he will be evaluated after that. If he can't go then it's off to the IR list.

IMHO Newberry is up to the challange. He is a hardnosed scrappy guy who will do anything to protect his QB and block for the running game. As long as his knees hold up.

Who do we have behind Newberry at that position that can actually perform at a level we'd be satisfied with?

We still have Withrow, although he wasn't very good last season.

Hopefully the additional 6 weeks of being on the PUP is enough, I wonder if AJ will hold onto him longer before placing him IR, like say if he'll be ready by week 10 or something like that would AJ keep him on the roster.

Parker was different because I don't think he was eligible for the PUP.

True. Because he had participated in the first day of TC before having his surgery, he had to be IR'ed instead of PUPed.

Once a player participates in TC or preseason, they can't be PUPed.

Since he hasn't been in any practices yet, he can still be PUPed and they can take up to after the 6th week of the regular season to bring him back.

After that, if he's still no go, they'll IR him.

Withrow was still a relatively inexperienced player. He'll have gotten stronger and technically sounder by now, but even at that, he will simply spell Newberry, especially against teams with less than stellar defensive lines. This also puts the decision of the specialist that recommended no immediate surgery in a worse light and the team physician who recommended the surgery in a better one.

I thought he did decent last year. He held his own I thought, it was just that Hardwick is that good. The change from an average player to a very good one at center changed the whole offense. Newberry will do fine, if healthy, but if Withrow is playing once in a while, we should be fine. It's against the big DT guys I'd be worried.

Umm, as I recall Parker was on the PUP list until week 6, because they hoped he would be able to come back during the middle of the season. Once it was clear he wouldn't, then they IR'ed him and traded for Chambers.

I imagine the exact same thing will happen with Nick, assuming he isn't ready for the Carolina opener. PUP, re-evaluated around week 6, and if he's still not ready then he goes on IR.

Parker wasn't on the PUP, he was ineligible because he practiced before deciding to have surgery which ended up ending his season. (like Wonderslug said.)

    Thank You!

I adopted Withrow for last season, but I dont have anyone for this year yet....so what I have to say is "off the clock" ;)

I thought Withrow did very well considering the circumstances! The guy becomes a Charger at the beginning of the season, and is starting for the team by week 6? Sorry if he wasnt "crisp" and totally prepared to fill Hardwick's shoes at that point in time.

He is going to have more time under his belt with the team...he will have a whole lot more snaps to work with in TC....As a backup C (even the main backup with Hardwick out), Im very confident in Cory Withrow!

It is funny to me that so many people think that Clary is going to beat out Shelton because of how well Clary played. Clary had been on the team for a whole year before Withrow got here....he plays an arguably easier position, and he had "smaller" shoes to fill. Still, Withrow "wasnt that good".....and Clary "is the rightful RT on the Super Bowl bound San Diego Chargers".

You still posting out of your ***?

Withrow signed with the Chargers in 2006, the same year Clary was drafted. Withrow had a year and a half in the Chargers system before having to sub for Hardwick last season. He also got some game time in 2006 when Hardwick was nicked up some.

    Withrow is a journeyman.

How does Clary relate at all to Withrow, other than for some dudes who don't understand the game and want to toss out crap takes to justify their babble.

Shelton isn't even in competition for the right tackle job.

Withrow is decent...people seem to forget that the teams he didn't look good against were Minnesota & Jacksonville...two teams with some of the best DTs in the game. I doubt even Hardwick would have looked good against those two.

I'm not sure Withrow is all that good. He seems a bit light to me and hasn't got the smarts some centers have to get away with it. I've seen Erik Robertson take some snaps in TC (in photos), wonder might they be looking at he or even Mruc in case Newberry's knees give in?... Not sure Withrow is a long term answer should we not have #61 back.

I think that, if this is true, AJ better be nosing around for some more depth at center. I'm not trusting Newberry's knees for an entire season & Withrow ..... let's just say that last year didn't give me the warm fuzzies about him.

Mruz is very heavy footed so he could ahve trouble with quick DTs. Not to mention I think he's been groomed as the future RG. I don't know anything about Robertson.
Withrow is a decent backup, nothing less but nothing more. The problem is that a 'decent' backup is a BIG drop from a pro-bowler in Hardwick. That's why Newberry was brought in.

If Newberry has problems, I'd definitely take Mruz over Withrow.

I think the "swirling rumors" really amount to one beat writer making an off-handed prediction based on the fact that Hardwick was in a boot. Hardwick is a cog in our line, and losing the dude would hurt big time. Here's to hoping that he makes it back at some point this season.

Newberry and Withrow appear to be an adequate pair to caddy the Center for Hardwick. The Chargers play too many games with injury matters for me to pay attention to swirling rumors at the moment.
