Ryan Leaf is worried Baker Mayfield is just like him

Baker Mayfield isn’t going to like this comparison any better.

Already unfavorably likened to NFL flameout Johnny Manziel, Oklahoma’s Heisman-winning quarterback is now being tabbed as a potential bust by one of the most disastrous draft picks of all-time — Ryan Leaf.

Appearing on 92.3 in Cleveland, Leaf — taken one spot behind Peyton Manning, with the second overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft — said he was bothered by Mayfield’s comments that the young quarterback has no intentions to change in the NFL, and was reminded of his own arrogance and naïveté, entering the league.

Leaf played in just 25 NFL games, and was out of the league by 2002, having thrown for 14 touchdowns and 36 interceptions, with a 48.4 completion percentage.

“A good litmus test for me is always when I listen to radio interviews or TV interviews, I tend to close my eyes and just listen to the voice, and hear the answer,” Leaf said. “I always say, ‘If it sounds like the 1998 version of Ryan Leaf, there’s definitely a red flag that needs to be raised there.’”

Mayfield has been closely linked with the Jets, who have the No. 3 pick in the draft.

Leaf had kinder words for the other quarterbacks likely to be taken in the first round. He labeled Josh Rosen as the “most pro-ready and most self-aware,” and believes that Sam Darnold’s maturity will help him evolve. That’s apparently unlike Mayfield, who was arrested last year for public intoxication and received constant criticism for his on-field antics, including a crotch-grabbing incident, which resulted in him being suspended for the start of his final Sooners home game.

“I’ve had a lot of people trying to give me advice through all this, but the thing that I’ve realized is the person I am is the reason I’m here today,” Mayfield said shortly before winning the Heisman. “I’ve had success because I’m confident and been enthusiastic and passionate about what I’m doing.”

My girlfriend is an OU fan/alum. She had a hard time rooting for Mayfield but said his teammates love him. That, right there, means he isn't a young Ryan Leaf. Nobody could stand that guy.

Who would know better if someone was Leaf-like than the man himself?

Of course his teammates at OU loved him. He raised as much hell as they did. Only thing is, they didn't get caught, Mayfield did.

I have some OU friends as well & they all give him a pass. I ask them this: if Mayfield played at Texas, OK State, Baylor or some other conference rival school, would they still give him a pass? Response I get is crickets.

It was the same thing with Joe Mixon.

Well, if a leader isn't loved by his teammates, he needs to dominate on the field. Leaf was hated, so, when he didn't perform well as quarterback right away, he was out of the League pretty fast.

Deano Spanos: “I see...hear my younger self in Martin Shkreli.....definitely a red flag needs to raise there.
No, I won't do it. But you don't need more “me”s....you've seen the sons.”

Well, I hope the Chargers trade up and take Mayfield so I guess we’re both on the same page regardless.

Not really. I don't care what L.A. does. It isn't like my nonexistent team will benefit either way.

The new main ingredient of the Los Angeles Chargers: no one cares.

Once, hopefully, an Alliance team is announced, even the bitter, bitter, so bitter and salty, want it both ways no matter what the law says, fans will care zero for the Circus of Spanni.

I can't name more than 5-7 players now. Tops.

That's 5-7 more than 99% of the population of Los Angeles could name.

    Let me see:
    Rivers
    Bosa
    Luiget
    Both Melvins
    Gates
    Allen
That safety with the dreads who got hurt all the time
    Verrett
    Dean
    AJ
    Alex
Is the masturbating security guard still with the team?
