City and county officials trumpeted an agreement last month to work together on a Chargers stadium deal, but this week San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said the city will play a "bench role" for now.

"We're not in the lead on this. National City and Chula Vista are in the lead," Sanders said in an interview. "Until they say, 'Here's what we want from you' or 'This is what we want to do,' we're simply there in a support role."
