NFL Predictions 2009: The San Diego Chargers will look to capture their fourth straight AFC West title this season, and based upon the shuffling taking place with the other teams in the division, it seems likely they will do so. Norv Turner's squad was able to take the top spot last season with just an 8-8 record. Sportsbetting.com figures the Chargers will do better than that this year as the team's regular season win total is set at 9.5 with the over a -165 favorite in the bookmaker's San Diego Chargers NFL Predictions 2009.

San Diego had one of the top offensive units in the league last season, ranking 11th in yards per game at 349 and second in points per game with an average of 27.4. Other than a few changes along the offensive line (starting right guard Mike Goff signed with Kansas City), almost the entire unit returns.

Quarterback Philip Rivers really came into his own in 2008, throwing for 4009 yards and 34 touchdowns. Despite his ability to rub some people the wrong way, including his own teammates on occasion, Rivers is one of the unquestioned leaders of the team. The North Carolina State product more than earned his lofty status after playing against New England in the 2008 AFC Championship Game with a torn ACL.

The always vocal Rivers will have the list of usual suspects around him when the season kicks off on September 14th. The top four receivers return (Antonio Gates, Vincent Jackson, LaDainian Tomlinson, Chris Chambers) as well as the top two rushers (LaDainian Tomlinson, Darren Sproles). Tight end Antonio Gates, who dealt with a toe injury all of last season, had 60 receptions for 704 yards and eight touchdowns. Tomlinson had his least productive season in the last handful of years, but still amassed 1110 yards on the ground and 426 through the air while scoring 12 touchdowns.

Defensively the Chargers were a little bit up and down last year and their 2008 numbers bear that fact out. The team ranked 25th in yards per game allowed, giving up 349.9, but came in 15th in points per game allowed at 21.7. They were a respectable unit against the run, holding their opposition to 102.6 rushing yards per game; however, they were horrible versus the pass, ranking 31st in the NFL by yielding over 247 yards per contest.

The club did improve halfway through the year when Turner let defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell go in favor of Ron Rivera. Rivera kept the 3-4 scheme intact, but was more aggressive in his calls. The first eight games of the season, the defense gave up 24.9 points per game. After the switch that number dropped to 18.5 per contest. Following a partial season and a full off-season under Rivera's guidance, the group figures to be much improved heading into 2009.

San Diego will also welcome back sack master Shawne Merriman. The team had just 28 sacks without the former Terrapin in the lineup. If his knee is fully healthy, he will provide a big boost to a unit that already includes top performers Jamal Williams (DT), Shaun Phillips (LB), and Antonio Cromartie (CB).
