San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said Friday he supports letting the Chargers try to work out a deal to build a new stadium in another San Diego County city – an idea Council President Scott Peters said he supports and will bring to the City Council May 1.

The Chargers have been pushing since 2002 to get a new football stadium in Mission Valley to replace Qualcomm Stadium, but city and team officials have not been able to reach an agreement.

The city's deteriorating financial condition, which includes a $1.43 billion deficit in the employee pension system, also made it difficult for San Diego officials to commit to helping the Chargers with a new stadium.</blockquote>
