SAN DIEGO ---- The Chargers are in a customary place, missing the playoffs for the ninth time in 10 seasons.

Backup quarterback Philip Rivers will be in a familiar role Saturday as well: He won't play, barring an injury to starter Drew Brees.

Coach Marty Schottenheimer was adamant Monday that his regulars will face the visiting Denver Broncos in the regular-season finale, which is meaningless in regard to the postseason.

The Chargers (9-6) were eliminated from the playoffs Saturday with a 20-7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Broncos (11-3), who wrestled the AFC West crown from the Chargers, are guaranteed the AFC's No. 2 seed.

So why not plant Rivers in the pocket, letting him gain some game experience?</blockquote>
