most legit sources rank defenses by total yards per game, right? im aware that scoring defense is somewhat important, but this isn't and shouldnt be the biggest factor on measuring an overall defense, imo. A couple of sources call denver the best defense in the league, bc they lead in scoring defense (12.sumthing per game). but, official league stats show that they actually give up more yards than the chargers, even after the cinci game. so i guess what im sayn is denver is fn overrated, and i think scoring defense stats are overrated also. you?

Well, to me, the scoring defense is the most important.

You win games by not giving up points, and scoring points.

The past 3 Super Bowl champions all have scoring defenses in the top 5. Included in that are passing defenses that ranked 12th through 18th.

Which is more likely to win you a championship? A passing defense ranked in the top 5, but a scoring defense ranked 12th, or a scoring defense ranked in the top 5, and a passing defense ranked 12th?

The reason passing yards given up is often a misleading stat is that for teams that are ahead comfortably in the 4th quarter, they tend to give up lots of passing yards in that 4th quarter because their opponent throws a lot to try to catch up quickly.

If your opponent has 6 drives that start from their 20 and they reach your 20 primarily passing, that's about 250 to 350 yards passing. However, if you give up only 1 TD and a few field goals from that point on in those 6 drives, all that work they do results in only 13 to 16 points for them.

Meanwhile, you score 3 TDs in response and you win the game.

Here's what the modus operandi is for a Super Bowl champion has been, the great majority of the time:

Scoring offense ranked in the top 10.
Scoring defense ranked in the top 5 (maybe 8 if the offense is top 3).
Passing defense ranked no lower than 18th.
    Rushing defense ranked top 5.

scoring defense is the most important stat category? even more than turnovers? i think the give/take margin is more important than a stat like scoring defense, which is affected by turnovers, among other things.

I think that people get caught up in these stats more than they should.

These stats are relative. Case in point, the Donks are something like 27th in the league in pass defense, but you have to take into account that they have had leads most of the year and team can't run on them.

Now for scoring defense. While the Donks deserve some credit, the fact that they score barely half as many points a game as the Bolts is a big factor as well.

Teams playing the Donks need to control the clock, win the turnover battle, and win the field postion battle in order to come out with a victory. It's a different strategy when you play a team like the Chargers or Colts. Against these teams you know you have to put atleast 30 on the board to stand a chance.

The difference between the Colts and us of course is that we have a defense. Let everyone in the media comment about how our defensive secondary is now exposed. Time missed by Igor, Shaun, Shaune, Luis, Foley can do that do you. That makes about us much sense as saying LT's inabilty to run is exposed because Billy Volek is now at QB. The success of any defensive backfield is in no small way dependent on getting to the QB.
