CHARGERS: Scott Bair's projected 53-man roster
    BY SCOTT BAIR sbair@nctimes.com | Posted: Friday, September 2, 2011 3:16 pm

The Chargers will release their 53-man roster on Saturday afternoon, but that won't stop staff writer Scott Bair from making one of his own the day before. Here's a list of who Bair thinks should make the roster, taking into account talent, versatility, special teams acumen and positions of need:
(Starters and obvious keepers won't get a comment)

    QUARTERBACKS (3)
    Philip Rivers
    Billy Volek
    Scott Tolzien
-- Earned a spot on this team. Norv Turner believes he can mold him into a solid QB.

    RUNNING BACKS (5)
    Ryan Mathews
    Mike Tolbert
    Jacob Hester
    Jordan Todman
    Frank Summers
    - Was hurt a lot, but Chargers love him. Solid on special teams.

    RECEIVERS (6)
    Vincent Jackson
    Malcom Floyd
    Patrick Crayton
    Vincent Brown
    - missed significant time, but too smart and too talented to let go.
    Bryan Walters
    - Turner says he has outstanding chance to make the squad. I agree
    Seyi Ajirotutu
    - Improved in special teams. Chargers have enough returners to keep him over Goodman, who isn't as good a receiver.

    TIGHT ENDS (3)
    Antonio Gates
    Randy McMichael
    Kory Sperry

    TACKLES (3)
    Marcus McNeill
    Jeromey Clary
    Brandyn Dombrowski

    GUARDS (3)
    Louis Vasquez
    Kris Dielman
    Tyronne Green

    CENTERS (2)
    Nick Hardwick
    Scott Mruczkowski

    DEFENSIVE ENDS (4)
    Luis Castillo
    Corey Liuget
    Vaughn Martin
    Jacques Cesaire

    NOSE TACKLES (2)
    Antonio Garay
    Cam Thomas

    OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS (5)
    Shaun Phillips
    Larry English
    Travis LaBoy
    Antwan Barnes
    Darryl Gamble
-- This was the last open spot. He's more of a project than people think, but he has all the physical tools to play the position.

    INSIDE LINEBACKERS (5)
    Takeo Spikes
    Donald Butler
    Stephen Cooper
    - Has shown he can still play, which puts Bentley back on the street
    Jonas Mouton
    - solid preseason
    Andrew Gachkar
-- Drafted as a special teamer and can contribute right now.

    CORNERBACKS (5)
    Quentin Jammer
    Antoine Cason
    Marcus Gilchrist
    Dante Hughes
    Shareece Wright
-- Will be given time to develop, long way to go, though.

    SAFETIES (4)
    Eric Weddle
    Bob Sanders
    Darrell Stuckey
    Steve Gregory

    SPECIALISTS (3)
    Nate Kaeding
    Mike Scifres
    Mike Windt

I think we cut a CB or put Tolzein on PS and throw in another d-lineman.
