    Rivers ready to roll
    By Scouts, Inc.

    Why To Watch
This is a huge rivalry game. It will mark the first start for third-year QB Philip Rivers as life after Drew Brees begins. The Oakland Raiders will also have a new QB at the helm, as they signed Aaron Brooks this offseason. Oakland star receiver Randy Moss is coming off an injury plagued season, but he and Brooks really seemed to start connecting towards the end of the preseason. Oakland's defense struggled to force turnovers last season, but defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has a young, hungry and athletic group he is working with this season.

When the Chargers have the ball
Rushing: How quiet was the preseason for RB LaDainian Tomlinson? How about 0 carries or receptions. Believe me; he will be well rested for this one. He averaged over 100 yards in both contest vs. the Raiders last season. San Diego finished last season with the ninth ranked run offense, while Oakland was ranked 25th in stopping the run. However, that was then and this is now. Under new head coach Art Shell, the Raiders appear much more disciplined on the defensive side of the ball.
Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan is free to run the system the way he sees fit. Ryan is an outstanding defensive coordinator and understands how to use his players. The Raiders' secondary and LB group were also much more disciplined in the preseason. The LB group will have a new look this year. The additions of Kirk Morrison at MLB and rookie Thomas Howard at the WLB give them better speed and toughness vs. the run. LB Coach Don Martindale has done an outstanding job with this young group too.

They are much more disciplined in their reads and he does a good job of putting them in position to make plays. Tomlinson has always had to carry a big load in this offense, and that load should even grow with an inexperienced QB at the controls. He should carry the ball 25-30 times this week in an effort to combat the blitz schemes Ryan will be throwing at QB Phillip Rivers. Look for the Chargers to run to their right behind ROT Shane Olivea as their LOT position has been a disaster with injuries throughout the preseason.

Passing: A new era in the Chargers' pass offense will take shape when Philip Rivers leads his offense on to the field. Even though the QB has changed, don't expect much to differ in the way they run this pass offense. Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron have a ton of confidence in Rivers' ability to run the entire offense. That means you will still see a lot of Regular (2 RB, 2 WR and 1 TE) sets and Ace (1 RB, 2 WR, 2 TE) sets.

The strength of this Chargers' team is not in the receivers. Once again their No.1 target in the passing game will be TE Antonio Gates. The Raiders love to play man coverage, which should give Gates many favorable matchups. Oakland will try to handle him with a DS early, but may have to switch to a DC if they can't keep him contained. It will be key for Oakland to defend him with a DS, because if they have to go to their Nickel sub-package, it will make them extremely vulnerable vs. the run. Rookie DS Michael Huff has been nicked up, but if he plays this week, he is the perfect type of candidate to draw a matchup with Gates.

The Raiders' secondary only had five interceptions last season. They need to do a better job of getting in position to make plays and take the ball away to help set up their offense. DCs Namdi Asomugha and Fabian Washington are athletic guys who can run, but neither has top ball skills. Look for the Raiders to bring a lot of pressure early. Rivers will likely have some jitters early in this one and the Raiders would like to get him rattled playing in the black hole.

When the Raiders have the ball
Rushing: On paper, this would look like a complete mismatch. The Chargers had the No. 1 ranked run defense last season and the Raiders were ranked 29th in running the ball. That is why the game is not played on paper. This is a new Raiders' offense, and they did run the ball effectively in the preseason. Art Shell wants to establish that this team can come out and be physical again. He wants to see the power running game they featured when he was the coach previously, so you can expect them to come out and try to be physical early. That task will be more difficult though because OC Jake Grove is going to miss this game with injury. That means new OC Corey Hulsey will have his hands full in the middle with Chargers' NT Jamal Williams, who is a monster inside.

Look for the Raiders to double team him all day, as Hulsey will not be bale to handle him one on one. Starting ROLB Steve Foley will miss this game for the Chargers, as he was in an altercation Sunday night that left him with three bullet wounds. Look for Shaun Phillips to get the start. With Foley out, the Chargers will not be as physical, but they will be faster and more athletic. For that reason, the Raiders could also struggle to run the ball wide. Look for them to try to stay between the tackles and get back to Art Shell football.

Passing: While Are Shell would like to get back to playing physical football, you can bet with Al Davis still at the head of this ship, they will feature their vertical passing attack. QB Aaron Brooks has improved throughout the preseason and even though he is an adequate starter at best, he does throw a solid deep ball. If the Raiders can get protection upfront, they will take numerous shots down the field vs. a Chargers' secondary that was ranked 28th vs. the pass last season.

Raiders OC Tom Walsh will be a key player this week. He has been retired for a number of years, and many feel he is way over his head in his new role. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has a ton of experience, so you can bet he will throw a lot at both Brooks and Walsh early on. The Chargers' secondary will be better this season with the addition of rookie DC Antonio Cromartie. He gives them an excellent athlete who can come in early in the season and excel in the sub-packages. The Chargers were victimized by way too many big plays through the air last season. They will get a chance early this season to see if they have improved in that area.

As I said on that "other" forum, this article has very few errors considering its author was teabaggin Al Davis while he typed it.

Man, I guess if you mention Al and Art enough times, the greatness of the Raiduhs overcomes all. Somebody get this guy some silver and black slippers, so he can click his heels together.

he's trying to be fair handed because lets face it, this ON PAPER is a massacre
They're defense is way below ours, their Running game is way below ours, their Cbs are young and unproven adn their LBs are likewise
He's trying to maintain some middle ground and conceding a few points but he admits the bolts can run circles around the faiders

    LT GATES PARKER MANU
    vs
    Morrison, Huff, Sapp and Buress

They don't have anyone close to as good on defense that we do on offense
