    Chargers: McNeill progress amazing

    By Kevin Acee
    UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

    September 1, 2006

Marcus McNeill showed up for offseason workouts big, soft and raw.

    Really raw.

“He came in like a scared rookie,” linebacker Shaun Phillips said.

“I thought he was a minimum of two years away,” right tackle Shane Olivea said.

No one could envision that, partly because of a series of unfortunate events, McNeill a couple of months later would be on the verge of becoming the Chargers' starting left tackle.

Tonight's exhibition finale in San Francisco will be the coaches' last opportunity to see McNeill in a game situation as they try to gauge who should start on the left edge, protecting Philip Rivers' blind side.

Roman Oben is out for at least five games after offseason foot surgery. Leander Jordan, out as he recovers from a stinger, has been typically spotty in protection this summer. Cory Lekkerkerker is the other tackle on the roster – with a chance to make the team, but no chance to start.

Like they said during the draft, McNeil was considered a top 15 pick for a while, but teams were chased away by his spine problems.
McNeil was widely considered one of the bigest steals in the draft, hopfully that back can hold up for years to come.

    BURRITO MAN ROCK ON!!

I am VERY excited to see him out there. Here's hoping the kid can get the job done, he's definately got the size to throw some bodies around.

Needless to say us and the chargers have been looking for a real left tackle for a couple of years. If mcneil can be that guy the team will progress alot from finally having a now and future o-line nuculeus. Lordy, lordy we've needed one for a decade now..

I have banging the drum of BEEF since forever. Pick any spot except for Oben but even there we need back-up help (if indeed he is kaput)

This is the only injury he has had in his career and given the soft schedule, he is more valuable down the stretch. Why not consider the possibility he could fully heal? It has happened before .... I know the odds and I know they are not ZERO so what's the deal with you saying he is DONE ? A Bill Walton reference ?

A basketball player with this type of injury is indeed done because they have to jump up and down the entire game, for rebounds and shooting.

Oben won't be jumping any time soon. :D

I am stoked that he is showing his skills and getting the notice of everyone on the team. The initial reports about him being slow of foot seem to have been related to the knee they talked about.

Looking forward to seeing how he does tonight.

Perfect world, he takes the LT job, Oben heals up and moves to RT, Olivea slides over to Goff's spot and sends him to a backup role.

I think Lekkerkerker could be a great RT if conditioned and trained properly.

Thats wonderfull and all, but we just resigned our RT for 6 years.
So it would be pointless unless Olivea sucks this year.

Move Shane to RG and put Cory at RT.

Make Mike Goff the backup guard.
