Projecting the Chargers roster, Take 5

By Kevin Acee and Michael Gehlken
    5:30 p.m. Aug. 28, 2013

It’s time for the fifth (and final) attempt to project the Chargers
roster. What a chore it has been in this year of so much youth and so
little depth. And it didn’t get any easier.

In their first pass at Take 5, U-T Chargers beat writer Michael Gehlken
and columnist Kevin Acee came up with just 49 players worthy of making
the final roster. A similar scene likely will play out in the coaches’
meeting room on Friday as the roster is winnowed from 75 players to 53.

Early this offseason, tackle Max Starks and wide receiver Robert Meachem
were considered near locks before performance dictated otherwise.
    Neither makes this projection.

By no means will Saturday's 53-man roster be the final cut. There could
be as many as five players who survive the Aug. 31 cutdown who are not
    Chargers by Week 2.

But in the meantime, here is the projected “final” roster:

Beltre over Keiser hmmmmm. I like that Harris got the chance to beat out Starks (provided that happens of course). Cromartie to make over the likes of Gatson is interesting.

Not sure if this is 100% accurate, but if it is, i'm not sure we can afford to cut Meacham.

    This says we have $5,283,280
    http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/san-diego-chargers/cap-hit/

It also says it will cost us $6,875,000 to keep him, and $10,625,000 to cut him, which means it will cost us $3.75mil more to cut him than to keep him. So cutting him would leave us with only $1,533,280 in cap space

We could save a mil in cap space by cutting Starks, but i'm not sure it really going into the season with only ~$2.5mil in cap space is a good idea. We will need space to account for injuries

I don't have a problem with Cromartie beating Gatson but I don't think Beltre beats Keiser, especially after the last game plus. My thought is that Beltre goes to the PS and Keiser remains on the roster. Admittedly while I've heard Williams has played well I really haven't seen it.

For both Beltre and Keiser they reiterated that special teams play was the factor

Man, there are a lot of re crosses on that chart, I honestly think a couple of the veterans (that they see expendable) get the axe as well, partly to help off set the cost it'll take to get Meachem out of town.

McClain is one that comes to mind, I was reading something ridiculous like he only played 13 snaps out of 200 something ths pre season, because they don't really use the full back.

Yeah I think Keiser makes the 53 too, we're just too short at OLB in terms of veteran depth (not that he is that much more experienced than Beltre but he is a vet). I've seen nothing from Tourek Williams, I guess the plan will be to get him to the PS for now. For me the last corner spot is wide open, all of Gatson, Cro2, Middleton and Johnson have played and done just ok for me. I like Gatson he was in perfect position for that TD but was beat by the most perfect pass & play ever. The fact that Cro2 has been tried on KR is telling though. Of course the locks are Cox, Wright, Marshall, Patrick and Gilchrist.

Maybe. I hope the are able to get rid of his contract so that we aren't just taking another cap hit next season. I say dump all the dead weight contracts they can and free up as much space for next year as possible

They don't have anyone listed as a kick or punt returner though...... odd.

It's a new Special Teams tactic. No punt returner, no kick returner= no fumbles/turnovers.
    Genius.

If Goodman gets cut - I wouldn't be surprised to see the Foz get kick returning duties #melikey

More and more they do, more and more I hate them. That's mine. I think we add one more at CB and one more at WR and TE.

    - Ronnie Brown is expendable, we saw it in preseason. McClain can play RB and we can put Phillips in at FB.
    - Robert Meachem goes on IR with the concussion. Probably the best thing for us, we don't eat his dead money and he doesn't take up a roster spot.
    - We need corner help bad. Patrick has suffered his 2nd concussion of the preseason, also will land him on IR/cut.
    - Jahleel Addae does not make this team. He simply cannot play special teams and isn't any better than anyone we have as a coverage safety.
