SHANAHAN HAS SOMETHING UP HIS SLEEVE?
Posted by Mike Florio on December 30, 2008, 7:51 p.m. EST

The immediate speculation in some league circles when word broke of the termination of long-time Broncos coach Mike Shanahan is that Shanahan has something else cooking, and that he forced his firing by refusing to agree to changes that owner Pat Bowlen wants to make.

According to Jeff Legwold of the Rocky Mountain News, part of that speculation is right on the money.

Per Legwold, Shanahan was fired because he refused to fire defensive coordinator Bob Slowik, whose unit surrendered 52 points in a Week Seventeen loss to the Chargers.

Said Bowlen, in a release issued by the team: “After giving this careful consideration, I have concluded that a change in our football operations is in the best interests of the Denver Broncos. This is certainly a difficult decision, but one that I feel must be made and which will ultimately be in the best interests of all concerned.

“I appreciate the 21 years that Mike Shanahan has given to the organization as an assistant and head coach, and the two Super Bowl wins in that time. His contributions hold a special place in Broncos history.”

So if Shanahan wanted to get out of town because he has something else cooking, what might it be?

Believe it or not, there’s speculation that Shanahan is trying to position himself for the Chargers job.

What’s that, you say? The Chargers are in the playoffs and they’ve made it clear that Norv Turner is coming back as head coach?

That was our reaction, too. But a highly-placed league source suspects that something is happening with Shanahan and San Diego.

In our book, it’s almost as unlikely as Shanahan coaching the Raiders. But we’ll continue to keep our eyes peeled on this one.

I don't want Denver's trash unless he's willing to come here as an OC.

Like that is ever going to happen. What are they going to say next, that an 8-8 team can make the playoffs? Pffft.

Doesn't the Rat get something like 20 million to sit at home for the next three years?

    Might be tempting.

Why? Being #2 in scoring this year isn't good enough?

Scoring wasn't the issue, defensive stops were.

If marty and your GM could not get along then Shanny would NEVER be able to co-exist with aj smith.

This is bullshyt at its best. I doubt Shanny even jumps right back into a coaching job this year......Hell be back next year maybe.......He could just retire and live in Denver in his brand new house he just built......

coaching the chargers under aj smith? never.......Shanny is a control freak.

Shanny may end up taking the Detroit Lions job.

Right now, I think Lions fans would be happy with 8 wins.

Absolutely! It's real easy to be a fan of a winning team, but if you stick with your team through 0-16 or 1-15, you're a true fan.

Right here. Were are you?

This is funny but I doubt it. In all honesty, I can only think of one poster that will be celebrating in Norv is back next season (unless we win the whole thing).

One and done may cost him his job (because 8-8 is 8-8).
AFCC attendee again might secure it.
    Higher... well duh.

One thing for sure... if this were to happen, it sure as Hell would stir the AFCW pot and draw eyes of every NFL fan.
It would make things interesting but not neccessarly good.

If Edwards is fired, I could see the Chiefs considering him.

So, let me get this straight...replace Norv with a coach that encourages his (former) players to chop block and that we have beaten for the Division title the last three years?

    :icon_rofl::icon_rofl::icon_rofl::icon_rofl:

    Probably not!
