Shaun Phillips ready to start chase

In Rivera's system, Chargers linebacker will hunt quarterbacks

    By Kevin Acee

Shaun Phillips tore through the line on a blitz Saturday night and hurried Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck into an incompletion.

Phillips would never deny that chasing the passer is his favorite thing to do and what he is best at.

But, listening to him talk, he was equally as happy dropping into coverage on the next play. And the two tackles he had in an abbreviated preseason stint pleased him as well.

“I'm best used in the starting lineup,” Phillips said. “I like to play football. If I'm on the field, I have an opportunity to make a play.”

This is a somewhat new Phillips, a player matured by time and trial.

“He's made himself into a solid football player,” defensive coordinator Ron Rivera said. “He's taken to coaching. There has been a gradual transformation as a football player.”

With Shawne Merriman out the final 15 games of 2008, his bookend outside linebacker was exposed.

Exposed as an unselfish all-around player.

“When Shawne went out, SP took it upon himself to help us out,” linebackers coach John Pagano said. “Shaun Phillips really changed his role.”

Frustrated at times under the control of former coordinator Ted Cottrell, who had him dropping into coverage as much as (sometimes more than) rushing the quarterback, Phillips is now embracing the distinction he has earned.

“I'm a football player,” he said this week. “If I'm on the field I feel I should be able to have an impact. I've got to continue to have that attitude. If I don't, I'm limiting myself and my own ability.”

Last year, Phillips played pretty much everywhere he could be expected to as Cottrell retreated after Merriman's season-ending surgery, and then Rivera retooled the defense and made Phillips a sort of rover.

Phillips, 28, was not above complaining about how he was used by Cottrell. And he still believes, “Last year, that definitely was a problem. I definitely was in coverage more than I needed to be.”

Judging by Rivera's stated desire to relentlessly pester quarterbacks and what has been on display in training camp, Phillips is going to be, in the words of Pagano, “back at home,” primarily chasing quarterbacks.

“It's looking that way,” Phillip said. “I can't say where Ron is going to use me. Our philosophy as a team is to be aggressive, get after the quarterback.”

Rivera knows that is when Phillips is at his best. He did not agree with Cottrell's method. But he understood it.

“Of all the athletes we have (at linebacker),” Rivera said, “SP is a guy you can play him like you did last year if you need to.”

More lightning to Merriman's thunder, Phillips has come a long way from the pass rush specialist he was considered to be when he assumed the starting job.

Phillips' durability is impressive, too. While stability is a hallmark of this defense, only Quentin Jammer and Jamal Williams have started more games than Phillips over the past three seasons.

“One of the things that motivates me is a couple years ago I saw Jamal Williams, with all kinds of surgeries, play 16 games,” Phillips said. “If a guy like that, 10 years in the league, can play all 16 games, I feel I need to be able to do that as well. . . . They pay us to play 16 games, nothing less. That's my No. 1 goal — to stay healthy for all 16 games.”

Phillips has been extremely impressive in camp, and he was magnificent in 16 snaps in the preseason opener.

“Shaun is getting himself ready to have an outstanding season,” head coach Norv Turner said.

It may be even better than that.

“Now, with Shawne being healthy, Luis (Castillo) being healthy, Larry (English) looking great, it's going to help (Phillips) get one-on-one blocks,” inside linebacker Stephen Cooper said. “I think he's going to have the biggest year of his career yet.”

    Sure as hell did. :icon_rofl:

We all figured out Teddy was lost after SM went down.

I can not wait until week 1. The D is going to terrorize whoever is playing QB for Oak. I am sure Garcia is looking forward to seeing the chargers D again if he gets the nod....

Hell, if SP didn't, I sure as hell would have. Like I always said, there's a reason Fat Teddy was working in the NFL Front office before AJ hired his arse. HE COULDN'T FIND A COACHING JOB! That said, I'm glad "The Other Guy" can just go out and go after the QB now with his speed and athleticism. Love to see that "Bowling a Strike" celebration after he gets a sack!
