    Shelmon to become coordinator

    By Kevin Acee

    January 24, 2007

MOBILE, Ala. – Moving to replace one coordinator before they possibly could lose another, the Chargers, according to numerous sources yesterday, have chosen running backs coach Clarence Shelmon to be their new offensive coordinator.

The compensation had not been agreed upon as of late last night, but the contract is expected to be completed today.

...As Shelmon and the Chargers worked on his deal, sources said there remained a slight possibility that Shelmon will turn down the job if the proposed salary is not satisfactory.

Asked about Shelmon, head coach Marty Schottenheimer said only, “We're not finished yet.”

    Good move. Not unexpected.

Anybody that saw Shelmon call plays in the preseason knows that he's far more creative than run run run.

I love this move. No sense in fixing what ain't broken. Under Shelmon, we'll keep the same offensive system. Great move.

 all this talk about him to Dallas... wouldn't be a wise decision for Wade to go there. He'd be a lame duck coach, because Jerry ain't gonna be able to land the big fish to replace the Tuna.

I have heard nothing official saying he is a consideration for Dallas or any other job. Is there a link to something other than speculation here?:icon_shrug:

I was curious why they went with the running backs coach as opposed to the quarterbacks coach.

    Anyone have any insight ?

    been an assistant the longest
had the chance to call plays during a few pre-season games
has done incredible work with LT and Lo-Neal and Turner
    has the most impressive resume

Shelmon's more familiar with our system. They have been grooming him for this role for the last few years, ever since Cam began to be considered for head coaching positions.

The biggest factor is that he has only been on the staff for 1 yr.

Shelmon is definitely a good choice.

I don't think Ramsdell has called offensive plays in any situation before either

I was a little worried that Cam might take Ramsdell as his OC but in todays Union Trib it sounds like Marty won't let it happen.

"NFL rules stipulate that assistant coaches who are under contract for the following season are free to interview for head coaching positions until March 1. An assistant coach who is under contract, however, now needs permission to fill a subordinate role somewhere else. Thus when Chargers tight ends coach Rob Chudzinski was offered the chance to coordinate the offense of the Cleveland Browns, Schottenheimer was under no official obligation to let him leave.

“If an individual has a legitimate opportunity to advance, increasing (his) responsibilities, we have always afforded them that opportunity,” Schottenheimer said. “But there's one caveat. Let's assume for the moment that Cam Cameron wants to interview some of our assistants to be his offensive coordinator. It's likely we would deny that because Cam is going to be the (Dolphins' de facto) offensive coordinator. The lines are very bright.”

This is good news and congrtulations to coach Shelmon. He might turn out to be a balls out coach and let it fly, of course the running backs would have to be more involved with our air game.

I agree espceially if Turner leaves.

We need a LEGIT number one WR and not some draft pick project.

    We have a #1

What we really need is a solid #2 to go opposite Jackson for the next 5 years and i dont think that person is currently on the roster

  And that solid #2 is... *drumroll please*...
    DREW BENNETT!!!

I hope. I think Bennett would be such a great addition to this team. And considering his #s are a bit down right now from where they were two years ago, he might not be too expensive. Certainly AJ has the cap space to fit a quality guy like him into the fold.

Plus, he would satisfy our Drewish requirement. :icon_tease:
