Binn had injured his calf and there was concern about his health/durability going forward.

End of Binn era comes because Chargers decide to go w/ Mike Windt. Younger and they control his status for at least two more years.

Long snapper Binn released by Chargers

The Chargers' David Binn was one of the first players in the NFL to make long snapping a speciality. — John R. McCutchen / Union-Tribune

After a team-record 17 seasons and 179 consecutive games, the David Binn era is over.
The long snapper was notified of his release by the Chargers on Tuesday morning.
The Chargers have elected to go with Mike Windt, a younger player whose contract they control for at least two more years.
Binn injured his hamstring trying to make a tackle in the 2010 season opener, the night he played in his 179th straight game and 256th overall with the Chargers, also a team record. He spent the final 15 games of last season on injured reserve, and the team subsequently used four more snappers with sometimes disastrous results.
Windt was the last of those snappers. He was signed Oct. 13 and played in the final 11 games.
Binn, the only Chargers player to have been around for the team's 1994 Super Bowl appearance, missed Saturday's exhibition in Arizona with a calf strain. There was concern about his durability.
Binn, 39, had one year remaining on his contract, at $1.1 million. The Chargers will pay Mike Windt $450,000 this year and control the 26-year-old's status at least two more years.

Your surprised they are keeping English? AJ is not ready to admit he was 100% wrong on that pick...

And damn, long snappers get PAID!

Yeah, I think you can chalk this up to concerns about Binn's durability. If you make a spot for him and he can't play, then you're bringing in a bunch of washouts off the street. They must have liked what they saw in Windt.

Binn was just a great player and person. I'm not sure he ever had a bad snap. And his punt coverage was very underrated. He made alot more tackles than most long snappers.

    Sad to hear.

Let's hope that we're solid at the position. I can't take 2 consecutive years of ST play like last year's.

Binn had a great run as a Bolt and will probably latch on with another club if he really wants to. Thank for all the years and effort you put in and nothing but the best.

So long to the Chargers' longest serving player. I hope this Windt guy can handle the job. ST needs to improve.

you gotta admit they have looked better since bissacia took over and Windt took over midway through the season last year and there weren't many blocked punts after that

End of an era, and a cold reminder that the professional sports are, first & foremost, a business and that hard “bottom line” decisions like this occasionally have to be made – I’m just glad I’m not the one who has to make them, because sometimes they are quite heartwrenching, and difficult at best!
