I personally see no downside to doing this--I see it playing out one of two ways:

    1. Kaeding knows that there is a "safety net" behind him, which gives him the psychological tweak that he needs to be confident in his abilities...he will kick in the postseason as he does during the regular season and we will not even need to use the backup.

    2. Kaeding implodes, again--but now, we would have a motivated backup ready to shine in a big moment and to perhaps reclaim a starting job elsewhere.

    Win-win?

If we're going to replace Nate in the playoffs we may as well replace him in the regular season.

And there is a downside to this. You're using up a roster spot on a 2nd kicker.

no way we carry two kickers... that's two spots on the roster. Also having a second kicker around messes with Nate's head... and he's pretty screwed up about things anyway.

I say we have 3 choices:

1- send him to a shrink and get him fixed

2- cut him and find another

3- keep him and never expect him to make a kick with the game on the line.

(Sadly I think #3 is what we end up going with).

    Nuts

I am becoming firmer behind Nate with each passing day.
Do you can Rivers because of the bonehead INT he threw - no way.
How can you bin an All-Pro kicker and hope that the guy you replace him with doesn't lose his bottle in pressure situations?

it's way too much of a gamble.

I can go out and miss 2 easy field goals.

Will you trust him next year? I wont. More important Will Norv trust him? I dont think so

If you can't trust the most accurate kicker in NFL history (b4 jets game) and the current All-Pro who had hit 60-odd straight from inside the 40... who can you trust?

A draft pick, or a FA?

I think Nate was automatic and developing a stronger leg. Stick with him and pray that this was a one-game blip.

And I can go out and give the ball to the other team with an errant pass as well.

What does this have to do with anything?

We can go get a Kicker off the street that none of us trust. Noev and AJ need to send a message. Nate needs to GO.

Look at the 4 kickers left in the playoffs.
Jay Feeley (Good vet.But not great) I would be happy to have him
Matt Stover (Mid season pick up)
    Ryan Longwell (Same as Feeley)
Garrett Hartley (who the hell is Garrett hartley. Mid season pickup)

    Kickers dont mean ****

We have footed 2 kicker spots in the past with Rayner or whoever that kicker was for the Chiefs when Nate was barely injured, and that was only to do the kickoffs.

I think it would be a roster spot well-spent, but that is just my opinion.

I wonder how many people were saying that when, for example Wade Richey missed 11 FG's for us in 2001?

Or draft Matt Bosher. He can punt and kick.

    We don't need a punter.

(Although it'd be a nice luxury to have a kicker that can serve as the back up)

The Colts have no problem keeping 2 kickers, a lot of teams do it. No reason why we shouldn't at least consider it, and if Kaeding can't handle it then I wouldn't want him kicking with the pressure on the line anyways.

I'd say the two-kicker solution is the most appealing. It's just one more inactive player on game day and a roster spot that could literally win the game. It takes the pressure of Kaeding, not that I think it matters. Finally, it's that little bit of insurance that Kaeding can no longer afford and keep spirits high because listening in to some interviews lately, it's almost as if the bolts are in our shoes - hopeful but not ready to trust Nate in the clutch.

    These players are hurting man.
Especially LT who has seen his best chance of a ring go up in smoke.
Now's not the time to take everything they say as gospel.
Do we get rid of Rivers for the INT? VJ and Phillips for the dumb penalties? The OL for poor blocking? No, we have a good TEAM that won 13 games.
Now's not the time for radical surgery.

I would be more than happy to give him one more chance knowing that there is a backup behind him to relieve him should he fail again.

He also missed a chip shot that would have won the game against Tampa.

Yeah, the playoff game is more important, but I'm just saying he's not exactly perfect.

I agree that, that is probably the best solution but the kicker played a big part in both championship games this weekend. I think the Chargers would be setting themselves up for failure if they do that.

I think they should just bring in another kicker, either free agency or by the draft and hope that he's mentaly stronger than Nate. I mean it's tough to do worse than 0 for3 right?

You don't have to be perfect just reliable when it counts.

That is not a fair comparison. A better comparison would be if Rivers pulled a Delhome and threw 5 picks in a game. Nate contributed absolutely NOTHING and has a track record for doing so in the playoffs.

You have to understand that these types of close games are common in the playoffs and a reliable kicker is KEY! It's not personal, I just want the team to win. And Nate does not help the team do that.

Dude, Nate is the new Wade Richey. Don't you see it? Sure, Wade sucked in the regular season so it was easier to can him, but Nate is worse. He waits 'till we need him the most to fail. I don't care about the regular season. The post season is what you play the regular season for.

Last time I checked they don't give out Lombardi trophies to the team with the second best regular season record.

But is he always reliable when it counts?

He was last night, but he's shown that he can miss an easy FG with the game on the line.
