By Nick Canepa

With know-it-all draftniks armed with stopwatches, yardsticks, slide rules and nuclear lasers coming out from under every pile of unused sweat socks, the Chargers draft is going to be seen as good, bad, indifferent or suicidal. A.J. Smith, not a scientist, doesn't care.

This NFL draft made it obvious. Smith has grown comfortable in his general manager clothes – comfortable with himself and his football team. He knows he knows what he's doing. And his team now is good enough. He has the talent for him to gamble in areas of need.

"I don't know if comfortable is the right word, but I'm a scout," Smith was saying yesterday, when the draft was over. "I'm confident in this area because it's what I've always done. It's my life."
