Smith's office for his first Chargers Quarterly Report. A terrible thing, granted, but excusable when the option was an October cruise out of New York (Smith can't cook or turn leaves). Still, being an accommodating soul, the team's general manager consented to a Quarter-and-a-Quarter Report, five games into the NFL's 16-game season.

As expected, most of the conversation spun around young quarterback Philip Rivers, who has been the biggest gamble of Smith's incumbency. But Rivers thus far has been four-of-a-kind. He could become the royal kind of flush.</blockquote>
