Why draft an OLB when we have Merriman and Phillips and have a glaring hole at RT and Oher is still on the board?

But he is a good player.

Still don't understand it though. Wonder if I ever will.

I yelled obscenities when the pick was made....but then I looked at his highlights...

I know the NFL is a long way from NIU...but damn...He's got some playmaking ability and ferociousness to him that I really like.

I tend to agree with Rip after I looked at the highlights of Tyson Jackson that I'm glad the Chiefs reached on him too...I would rather have an aggressive, angry player than a guy who looks like he's going through the motions on film.

On the down side, I think this is a signal that Merriman is leaving in a year.

or this is extra insurance at the position because we were ****ed up at LB, we had to use our third string at one point, we even tapped into the special teams linebackers.

The guy has alot of playmaking ability.....However I will not sit here and try to convince you that its a good pick....We do have glaring needs at RT and ILB....But with Oher, Britton, and definetly Maualuga on the board why we go with a depth pick is beyond me since we only have 1, day one picks. I think this was a good pick if OLB was a need....

Either Aj Smith is not gonna resign Merriman next year or we just wasted a first round draft pick on depth....This makes me furious after watching our garbage *** ILB's last year, not being able to get late game stops to get us the ball back.

We have 2 1st day picks, unless they moved round 3 to day 2.

In all fairness...our OLBers were garbage too...including Shaun Phillips.

No Convincing but some possible reasons...

Merriman has a big contract coming...
We can't afford another OLB injury...
Rivera has used 3 OLB on the field previously...
Either Merriman or Phillips are on the block

I'm hoping english will be as good as merriman. Which would make our defense dangerous. But we still need a good d-end to really get solid.

i keep thinking were gonna do some trade to get a 2nd rounder. Otherwise alots gonna depend on our 2nd day picks.

English is listed as a DE...

Why wouldn't we play him there?

Does there really need to be convincing? Did you guys miss last season or something? We have no, as in zero, OLB depth. People wanted us to be more like the Giants/Steelers defense, well this is what they do. They invest in pass rushers, and yes that means using a high pick for backups.

Remember when we were drooling at the thought of Merriman/Phillips/Foley pass rushing trio.

We never got to see that, but now we've got Merriman/Phillips/English.

I've wanted us to get another pass rusher so badly, I just didn't expect it to happen since there was no talk about it. Very happy with the pick.

    Either way, he's a mid-late 20 value. Not a good pick.

On the brightside, this is what the Giants did when they drafted Mathias Kiwanuka, you can never have enough pass rush.

But you see you have to look at the big picture in that case.....We were missing our best defensive player last year...Who by the way happens to be an outside LB. Look back at the year before that when Merriman was on the field...We led the league in TO's and before that sacks....

Merriman makes Shaun Phillips good because of the mismatches he creates off the end, otherwise Phillips is just an average undersized OLB.

You say mid level talent. Yet Denver who picked practically right after us picked Ayers who isn't as good a pass rusher as English.

But lacking a second round pick, we could have traded back and got him...and if not there are plenty OLB's in this draft worthy..

Who says we could have traded? I keep hearing this and nobody has shown that we had someone willing to take our 16 from us...

It's a weird pick for "us" in that it was not a "spot of need" from a fans point of view, but he is a damn good football player...

What does lacking a second have anything to do with him. If we traded back maybe we get a 4th. The only way we would have gotten a 2nd is if we completely traded out of the 1st.

I don't know why people think a team would trade their 1st and 2nd to move up a few spots, especially when you see the Browns and Pats traded down and all they could get were 5th (pats) or 6ths.

Do we really need a 5th or 6th pick? And really is it worth it to trade spots with a team behind Denver who clearly also needed a pass rusher and could have just as easily picked him?

Phillips is far from undersized as an OLB....as a DE in a 3/4, yes...as an OLB? No..not at 6'4 262. He's pretty much identical to Merriman and is significantly bigger than English.

Me too...I was enraged when I heard his name called...This calmed me down quite a bit...I'm so sick of the ***** tackling on this team...He overpowers people...wraps up well and people go down hard when he tackles them.

Is there a chargers cam. Did they shut down the chargers draft war room. Are there any coaches and owner at draft central or are they all leave.

I try to remember this point, but I have to say there were 3 trades after us in the first round. You would think we could have gotten one of them to trade with us.

My guess is no one wants to deal with AJ...

I like the UT article which says all three OLBs will be on the field at the same time, that could be fun.

I think it's telling that Maualuga fell all the way out of the 1st round.

The more I learn about English, the more I like the pick.
