Somebody explain to me how LT's situation compares to Shaun Alexander

I'm starting to get sick of everyone pointing to Shaun Alexander in an asinine attempt to explain how it makes sense to release LT at this point of his career.

"Just look what happened to Shaun Alexander 2 years after his MVP!!!"

So what? How do the situations compare? I mean, other than elapsed time after winning the award. Are the Patriots supposed to release Tom Brady after next season? Are the Colts supposed to release Peyton Manning in two years?

    Alexander's 2 post-MVP seasons with Seattle

    2006: 896 rushing yards, 48 receiving yards (944 all purpose) 7 TDs
    2007: 716 rushing yards, 76 receiving yards (792 all purpose) 5 TDs

    LDT's 2 post-MVP seasons with San Diego

    2007: 1474 rushing yards, 475 receiving yards (1949 all purpose) 18 TDs
    2008: 1110 rushing yards, 426 receiving yards (1536 all purpose) 12 TDs

For those not doing the math at home, LDT only had 200 all purpose yards less and the same number of TDs this past year alone then Alexander had in his 2 post-MVP seasons combined.

Tomlinson's clearly on the downward side of his career but his situation hardly compares with that of Shaun Alexander, save for the fact that he's 2 years removed from an MVP season.

LT is head and shoulders above Alexander. Alexander relied heavily on his offensive line and FB for his success.

Thanks Hollywood! Maybe LT is on the downward side of his career, but a lot of teams would kill for an RB who can put up those type of numbers. We need LT for continuity and to school some young stud RB we get in the draft.

I orginally posted this at another NFL-wide board where a lot of fans get snotty over "LT" being Lawrence Taylor's nickname and prefer to call LT "LDT".

I appeased them in the post (as I do in a lot of posts involving LT over there) because I didn't want to steer the conversation away from the actual point.

I cut and pasted it over to here.

Alexander was more of a power runner and took more of a beating than LT and as I recall it was a broken foot that just never got right that drove him into retirement. LT takes care of himself (Emmett Smith taught him how to do that) and avoids taking some of the big hits. I expect him to play 2 more years and then hang up his cleats and walk away...while he can still walk.

All running backs are not created equal....but try telling that to your typical "expert"...geez!

Lawrence Taylor has gone on record saying he's fine with Tomlinson taking on the nickname. So the people that cry about it are just being douchebag crybabies.

People who do that **** are just idiots. Like every nickname can only be used once. Hell, LT are the guy's initials.

    I agree with you two.

I just prefer the conversation not trun into who is and who isn't "LT" but, rather, to actually stay on the point.

I don't think it pertains to alexanders career. But LT's career parallels emmit smiths and edgerrin james career fairly well.

Good point...they are similar because of the age, position and to some extent injury. These thing do not mean that LT will go out the way Alexander did.

I hope that doesn't mean LT will end up in Arizona to end his career too.
