The San Diego Chargers have signed FB Frank Summers, a source confirmed.

Summers (5-foot-10, 240 pounds), who was selected in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, finished last season on Pittsburgh’s practice squad. His practice squad contract expired the day after the Super Bowl. The Steelers had an exclusive seven-day negotiating window to re-sign him, which ended on Monday. After that, Summers could negotiate a contract with other teams.

The Chargers now have three fullbacks on their 80-man roster.

I saw this yesterday. There was speculation that the Steelers wanted to bring him back, but he felt he had a better chance of being involved and used in a style that would best suit him with the Bolts.

It could be part of the equation. I would argue that we should not expect to see the team that will put us over the top in February... ;)

Does it? Providing things work out, come May and June the team will have camps, those camps will lead to training camp, preseason, and eventual roster cut downs. Some players will then be put on the practice squad.

This all cannot be done without bringing people such as 'Tank' in.

The Chargers have excelled at finding the diamond in the rough through FA, be it undrafted or bargan basement. This should not beg any questions or surprise anyone in my honest assessment.

    Lighten up, Francis. :p

Perhaps AJ has seen the light on the idiocy of keeping CoonAss around & is looking for a real lead blocker?

i like him for the reason if we ever run a full house backfield " which san diego never does" itll be ryan mathews carrying the rock with tolbert and summers blockin along with the line. and i think he could be a good asset if we deal hester. him and tolbert could help solidify the backfield

We need D players and less RB's. We have Tolbert and Mathews what else do we need? Unless he is to replace overpaid Sproles. I'd trade Sproles for sure he is 1 dimensional. I've talked many times about signing only multi functional RB's who can block, run and catch. How can u effectively run no-huddle with a RB who cannot block or catch?

On the positive at least he appears to be my type Rb. Also good to see some action to acquire players hope this is a pattern to come this off-season. Now upgrade our lines and WR to be better proven blockers. Anyone know if he is a proven pass blocker RB? He sounds like a cool RB if we can get ride of Sproles & Hester. Otherwise we will be short in other areas and not have enough back-ups at the main positions.

Stock-piling DB's is my theory. They can back-up injured players and play on special teams.

Hey genius, you can't trade Sproles when he is a Unrestricted free agent.

And how do you figure that a 240 lb back is the replacement for our 180lb change of pace back?

Dude, every post yu put up just makes you look even dumber

U missed my point. We don't need a change of pace RB. We need every down RB's. So our opponents don't know that we giving the ball to our 180 lb guy who only comes in on plays to him. Pro level being unpredictable is a huge issue.

I'm guessing it'll have just as much impact as last years big FA signing, Marcus Mason.

And close to as much as last year top draft pick, and probably more than the top draft picks from 2007 and 2008.
