Sporting News ranks NFL coaches; Turner 20th
    Written by

There's an offseason ranking or list for everything, it seems.

The NFL's 100 best players, voted by the players ... The latest Las Vegas odds for the Super Bowl, fresh off the presses …

Here's more fodder to the fire: Sporting News released this week a ranking of the 32 best NFL head coaches, and Chargers coach Norv Turner sits at No. 20.

If there's any significance to such lists, it's that they capture outside perception.

The Chargers, according to the NFL Network's player-voted rankings, so far have just one player on their roster among the 100 best players in the league. (Quarterback Philip Rivers is No. 61.) According to the Vegas sportsbooks, the Chargers play second-fiddle in the AFC West to the Broncos, the defending division champion.

And Turner is now the 20th-best head coach. The Broncos' John Fox, per Sporting News, is seventh.

So, the Chargers are an underdog team full of largely underdog players with an underdog coach. More fodder to the fire, indeed.

It's a flimsy business, the NFL. Of note, there's Tom Coughlin.

In 2006, the Giants head coach was 60 years old, which Turner turned this month. He was lumped among the league's least capable, sitting in the hot seat, at risk of being fired for the second time in five years.

In 2007, he signed a one-year contract extension, and the Giants won their first of two Super Bowls in a five-year span.

Sporting News now considers Coughlin the NFL's best head coach.

Its rankings were composed rather subjectively, being based on more than on-field accomplishments.

"They also consider where each coach stands now," the site says, "and who you would want on the sideline if you had to win one game."

Wow! In 2006 I was saying:

"Naw, Coughlin's nowhere near as bad as folks are saying..."

Who'd have thought I'd ever have the opportunity--in 2012--to say:

"Naw, Coughlin's nowhere near as good as folks are saying..." ?!?

Yeah #1 is just the result of people being prisoners of the moment, there is not a chance in hell he's the better than Bill Bellichick, even if his roster does matchup well with the Patriots.

In reality the Giants were extremely lucky to even make the playoffs last year, didn't they get swept by the Redskins?

Hey just because the 'Skins were 3-11 against the rest of the NFL, and 2-0 against the mighty Giants (51-24 combined)
does NOT mean that the Giants weren't a team for the ages, and that Bill Walsh isn't fit to carry Cougher's jock! ;)

I would honestly rank Tomlin ahead of McCarthy and the idea of Fox at 7 is laughable, not saying he's a bad coach I happen to think he's a very good coach but he's only ranked there because Peyton Manning. I would put Lovie, Reid and Mike Smith above him

How do you embed an animated gif? I have tried it before and it never seems to work for me.

I upload mine to photobucket.com first. Once there, you can select it and it automatically copies the appropriate IMG command to your computers clipboard. Then all you have to do is paste it in your reply.

I respect Conc because he does not compete with posters and other mods who try to increase their profile by prognositcating doom and gloom by assuming and documenting as if everything that can go wrong will go wrong. If there was a market here to speculate upon bandwagon seats... there would be a profit to be made. Conc and a few precious others here are consistent supporters.

Agreed. Of course it comes off like unchecked homerism to the Eeyore's of the fan base, which are far too plentiful for my tastes.

If the team really brings you that much heartache, you just might be a candidate for the definition of insanity.

Indeed sir. The bottom line for me is that we are looking at an entertainment business. The Chargers are a very entertaining football club. Certainly they don't rate 20th in the league in that category. But others as your society demands are just result orientated. It's as if I am discussing Zappa and the cretins say... how many Top 20 hit singles did he have? How many million records did he sell? Like we're talking Whitney Houston here. :D

My disapproval of the management and/or coaching of the team, or of the performance quality of individual players, in no way abridges or diminishes my support of the team. You would do well to learn to distinguish the difference between support and confidence of success.

The Chargers have had, and will continue to have, my unquestionable support. The have not recently had, and will continue not to have, my confidence of their success, until such time as they give me reason to give it to them again.

This petty, "say everything in Chargers' Park is fantastic or you aren't a true fan" is wearisome. I've said my peace on the subject.

    I hear you.

I find the "everyone sucks, A.J. sucks, Norv sucks, the towel boy sucks, we will never win anything" group to be just as wearisome. Just like politics, if you are too far one way or the other, you are probably an idiot.
