So much for Chargers running back Darren Sproles taking it easy this week.

Last Saturday, Sproles left St. Louis with his knee wrapped in ice after a collision in the Chargers’ preseason game against the Rams. Head Coach Norv Turner suggested that Sproles would likely have a slow week.

Instead, the fourth-year pro was back on the practice field two days later, and Monday night Sproles rushed for 102 yards on 13 carries, scoring one touchdown and catching one pass to help spark the Chargers’ victory.

“You definitely get worried when you see someone take a shot like the one he took last week,” Pro Bowl back LaDainian Tomlinson said. “But he came back and played great tonight and showed that he is very capable of getting the job done.”

Sproles began to get the job done early in the first quarter, showing off his tenacious running ability and cutting through the Seahawk defense for 24 yards on his first carry, followed by another 20 yards on his second. Then, one play later, he ran for an additional nine yards which capped off a total of 53 rushing yards in the Bolts’ first drive of the evening.

“He looked real good, he looked so good that he was making me look good,” fullback Mike Tolbert said. “I was making my blocks, I’d look up and he would be ten or fifteen yards up the field, making me look better.”

Sproles put a one-yard touchdown on the board half way through the second quarter, which turned out to be one of only two touchdowns the Chargers scored in their 18- 17 victory over the Seahawks.

“I felt pretty good on the field,” Sproles said. “We need to work on a few things but I thought it was a pretty good night.”

While he’s somewhat been typecast as an outside runner, many of Sproles’ runs came between the tackles Monday night, allowing Sproles to show his versatility as a ball carrier.

“You think of him as an outside guy and catching it out of the backfield,” quarterback Philip Rivers said. “I thought it was good for him to get in there with the first team and go. He made some really good, tough runs. You’re talking about a guy who’s not very tall but pound for pound, he’s probably the toughest guy on the field. He’s strong and close to the ground and not easy to tackle.”

Monday’s performance was a continuation of a strong preseason for Sproles. He’s averaging 5.6 yards per carry, which has allowed him to make Head Coach Norv Turner feel very good about how his team’s running game is shaping up.

“Darren is an explosive player,” Turner said. “There are certain runs that he’s very, very comfortable with. “We’ll get LT back and playing and mix Sproles and Jacob, I think we’re going to have a good group there.”

The Gnat is fun to watch and he's going to be bothersome to defenses around the league. You know, you can hear him buzzing in your ear but you can't see em, that's it! Sproles is a no see em.

I think he has finally seen the light on how to be a true running back. He made this one sick *** cut when Goff through a block for him.

The pick up on the blitz was awesome. That's when his size really became an advantage. He could get under the rusher and just explode.

...I wasn't a part of this forum last year but I vividly remember hoping and praying that one of those last roster spots went to this little dynamo. I was overjoyed when they drafted him in the first place because I had seen him torch big name schools on a regular basis for a couple of years. He got well over 200 against what people were calling at that time, possibly the greatest college team ever, OKIEHOMO. Durability, not ability, has been his only question mark. Luckily AJ knows what he's doing. Now I'd sign him to an extension before he realizes just how good he really is
