State of the Chargers Week 7-Bye Week (3-3)…

Who the hell are we? Nobody and I mean nobody thought we would be 3-3 at the bye week. New coach, same coach, different play book, same play book….We are supposed to be 5-1 with a loss to NE, and at worst, 4-2 with a loss to NE and CHI…

That is how the story went 7 weeks ago. Fast forward to today…Parker is out and Chambers is in. That is the only real change. We have a few dings, bumps and bruises, but nothing that is season ended other then Parker…Does this change anything…?

Lets look at our season from two view points. First the overall of the first six games and then lets looks at the last two where we began what we all hope is our push to the Super Bowl…Which, BTW, is totally doable (Still)!

    OFFENSE…
    -11th in passing yards 1,312.
    -TD-INT RATIO 7 and 7.
-We have been sacked 9 times which is 12th best in the NFL…Indy has been sacked 3 times.
-We are 9th best in the NFL in completion percentage only 7% points behind league leader NE.
-We are averaging just 22 points a game.
-We are netting 208.7 Yards per game via the pass
755 yards total rushing yards for the season for an average of 125.8 YPG…

    DEFENSE…
324 Yards per game given up…
We have 16 total sacks for the season.
We are giving up 19.4 points a game this season.
We have 7 INTs in the season.

    LAST TWO GAMES…
    Averaging 34.5 points a game.
    423 Total Yards Per Game.
We are averaging 210 Yards per game on the ground.
We are giving up an average of 270 yards a game on D…
We have 7 sacks in these two games, which is almost ½ of our season total.
Over the last two games we are giving up 8.5 points a game.
3 of our 7 INTS are in the last two games.

WE HAVE IMPROVED GREATLY MY FELLOW FANS…The trend has been established…We have started our push regardless if we call it one or not. The score, the Win/Loss column you name it. They all point to this being the team we expected to take the field, not the one that won one game out of 4 to start the season. None of us needed this post of point it out, but it’s interesting to see.

Where do we go from here? 1. Rivers needs to use his receivers. Gates is going to get double teamed; LT is going to have 2/3 of the D keying on him. That leaves either VJ and Chambers one on one. Exploit the weakness in the D and take what they give. Our offensive line has played much better the last two games. Losing Hardwick is OK in that we have a veteran backup. Olivia needs to work harder. I like our line a ton, but work can always be done. This was a great time for a bye week.

On defense we need to continue to rush the passer, rush the passer and rush the passer. The number one running team in the NFL came in here and we shut them down. A notoriously great running team faced us the week prior and they got slapped down for 72 net yards rushing…Our front 7 is back…Hopefully Jamal makes the strides we expect him to make in recovery. Wilhelm coming back has changed a ton. He is great in passing situations and seems to have brought a spark back to the team. Our secondary has looked tougher then ever the last two games. Tackling has improved, coverage hasn’t broken down, and Jammers big stop at the end of the half v Oakland was a damn charge… I can go on and on with numbers showing how we have improved and how we are know going in the correct direction in almost all catergories...I just threw a few out for talking points....

Up…The only place to look is up vatos.

Nice job TBF but with the addition of Chambers I don't know how much Gates will be getting double teamed. IMO Chambers changes how defenses have to approach us and he's a Norv Turner guy. This is going to be fun to watch.

And hey did we really miss Wilhelm that much? It sure seems like it. Wait until he has a couple more games under his belt and the bye week to continue to heal.

Defenses have and will continue to make Rivers beat them (or at least attempt it) by putting the kitchen sink in the box to stop the run. If they don't we run all over them. Rivers doesn't have that respect (yet, and to be deteremined many moons from now). That being said. Rivers and Gates are a link, that works. IMO they are going to give us either Chambers or VJ or a combo of both...Everyone knows what Gates and LT can do with Rivers...The jury is out on VJ and Rivers and it hasn't even conveneded on Chambers.

Wilhelm is a bad ***...I hope he continues to play as he as the last two. Could be a coincedence that we are improving w/his return or not. That jury is still out IMO.

I would have to say him being back has helped the D. GB and KC our D was not in sync and looked lost at times. Polk will always be a sub/ST guy and Dobbins is too slow in coverage .

I strongly feel we were a couple plays away from being 5-1 right now.

    • 2:31 to go, 3rd and 3 on the SD 28, incomplete pass to Jackson, punt, 2 plays later Greg Jennings runs past what seems like every single member of the secondary for a 57 yard game winning TD thanks to HORRIBLE coverage
    • Forgetting LT is on the team in the second half vs. KC. Terrible coverage on a short pass to Dwayne Bowe leads to yet another long TD in the 4th, we get the ball back, then punt, then get an INT and still have a shot. 3 plays later Rivers gets blitzed and fumbles which is picked up by KC and run back for the back breaking TD.

A few series of events that, IMO, put of season in jeopardy, but instead of folding like many predicted they would, they went back to work. Going into Denver in one of the most desperate of must win games, our boys threw down a beating of historic proportions. Oh man, what a HUGE sigh of relief the Denver game was.

I'm glad they got their confidence back, which seemed tied to the loss in NE, once we lost that game it was just a downward spiral of uncharacteristic bad play by alot of our more solid players. It's funny how one win or one loss can heavily affect the entire organization and fan base.

I like what I've seen from the team in the past few weeks, but I'm still apprehensive because I firmly believe Denver and Oakland are bottom feeders, Denver moreso than Oakland (Oak is slowing moving back up the ladder, they just don't have enough good players, yet). I like that Norv has gone back to the basics and figured out how to win with these guys, I think it's only gonna get better. I'll bet good money that part of the problem the team was facing, with a new coaching staff and expectations through the roof (not just from us but from the entire league), was just an overall tightness and, for lack of a better word, FEAR of losing. Something I call "The Marty Effect".

I still believe we will be in the playoffs, but our back is up against the proverbial wall, with the amount of good teams in the AFC, we can't afford another hiccup. I think 11-5 gets us in, 10-6 you'll be looking at head to head records for entry into the Tourney.

Can't prop you yet, but good stuff. Chambers impact is going to be substantial, but how much is hard to tell until we see how other teams react and how VJ and MF respond to his presence. I am drooling a bit, though. I am not happy with Olivea. That much I do know.

I honestly think we could win the division at 9-7, though I wouldn't want to take the chance.

We have to win the ones we should win from this point on. Losing to teams like Houston or Minnesota would be brutal. We will see if the Bolts are back and ready to establish elite team status over the next two games.

Nice post, TBF. Things are looking up for the Bolts, which has definitely improved the mood here!!

PR is going to have to make teams respect him, & hopefully Chambers is going to assist him greatly in doing that.

Time for the offense to let it rip & the defense to keep up the pressure.

    GO BOLTS!! :bolt::bolt:

Great stuff TBF. I like it.

Now I don't mean to nit pick, but something in your stats caught my eye. I knew we had score more points this season than we allowed, so I bolded the part of your post that I didn't make sense to me.

I checked and we have scored 137 points this season and allowed 119 points. This isn't just what the defense allowed, but the whole team.

Dividing by six games I came up with these numbers.

22.83 points scored per game this season.
19.83 points scored against us per game this season.

Did I do the number differently? No biggie, but I was curious how these numbers are different or if you calculated these a different way.

Good job on the summary.

Here we sit at .500 and the way we got here was not pretty. We somewhat righted the ship against a horrible Denver team and the Raiders who have marched their way to a historic NFL record for losses against their own division at 16 consecutive games.

The Bye allows two things to happen in my mind:

    1. Jamal gets healthy after double knee surgery (pump that fatboy with HGH)
    2. Chambers gets a few extra reps before he hits the field

The things which have irked me is the lack of innovation in play calling. Fans are dying to see the Son of Norv and LT in the backfield at the same time. Even a wishbone look with Sproles to incite the defense to ask WTF is happening here.

Where is that mad dog attacking defense? The front 7's performance has been sub par to date but it is improving albeit slowly.

I am still not sold on this coaching staff and suspect this season will be a dogfight (ala Vick :icon_banana:) to the end.:bolt:

I am very worried about Ted Cottrell's "permanent prevent" defense.
That is the correct name for it.

We are giving up yards in bunches and we've gotten a little lucky the last 2 weeks the the Broncos and Raiders coughed up the ball in golden scoring opportunities.

Dude, we did not give up yards to the Raiders in bunches. Come on. The defense allowed 7 points.

I agree the last two weeks have been encouraging and I don't care if it was Denver and Oakland. We still kicked *** in Denver and we beat an improving Oakland team that was running the ball very well. Against the Raiders our D-Line was in the offensive backfield all day.

Man is Gallery a bust or what? He had a bunch of penalties against us.

On a couple of occasions I thought maybe we would go for it on 4th down or we ran on 3rd and medium...At the time, I was second guessing, but in retrospect. Our D was killing and all over anyone in the backfield...

I thinks its time to call a duck a duck...He has had three different positions to start at and by the looks, he is subpar on all three thus far.

The Defense is looking more aggressive of late. I've learned not to get too giddy over one guy coming to town, but I think Chambers will have a far greater impact here on this team in less than a full season than in any full season he had for Miami. He is already worrying Defensive coordinators, I'll wager.

Yep very nice post, and it's what we all WANT to hear...but the only fact that matters is this...We haven't beaten a team with a winning record yet, and every team that 3-3 or better has beaten us. So until we beat the "real" contenders. I'm not convinced.
We now have Norv, that's a major consideration...he's got allot to prove.
