<img src="http://www.bolttalk.com/images/breesrivers.jpg" class="left" alt="Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers" />SAN DIEGO - A funny thing happened on the way to Philip Rivers' presumed destination for stardom in San Diego. Drew Brees happened. So the Chargers don't have a quarterback controversy. But they do.

Rivers was expected to push Brees for the starting spot last season after being drafted fourth overall by the New York Giants and immediately traded to San Diego for Eli Manning, who had said he would not play for the Chargers.

Instead, the highly touted rookie from North Carolina State held out for all but the last week of training camp because of contract haggles, and Brees, by default, opened the season with the job.
