Any coach (and possibly GM too) would want to install their own system when they get here. Now they could alter their system or even work with our pieces, but by and large they will want to run their system and bring their own pieces into place.

Now if we draft a guy who wants to run a 4-3, and let's face it our 3-4 hasn't been very successful in a few years, we'd have to convert our pieces nearly across the board. Our DL has a lot of young players (Thomas, Martin, Liuget) in addition to the veterans (Cesaire & Garay) and while we have some good 4-3 potential LBs (Butler, Spikes) our OLBs are not very viable for a 4-3

So how would you make this work? who would you add? Who would you trade?

It has been successful, as recently as last season, it has not been consistent.

Go to a 4-4 defense... Just do something different, and not the Thunderhammer.

how do you draft a guy that wants to run a 4-3? :D

I say let the new DC run whatever they want to run as long as they play with intensity

    DL: Castillo, Thomas, Garay/Martin, Leigut
    LB: Phillips, Butler, Mouton/New guy

would propably need to draft a pass rushing end and maybe another LB

The 3-4 works if you get pressure on the QB and make him alter timing with the WR's. The fact is we really don't get as much pressure on the QB as we should. No offense to Phillips, but in a 3-4 you need atleast 1 dominant pass rusher because it opens up gaps for the rest of the LB's blitzing.(See Shawn Merriman on roids) The fact that we are getting no pressure means the QB has all day to stand back there and take advantage of slot wr's or TE's on our LB's in coverage.

I don't care if we run a 1-9-1 as long as we hit some QBs in the face and stop some RBs somewhere near the line of scrimmage before we send them to the pro bowl.

Phillips is the only decent rusher we have. To be a good pass rushing team we need our D-line all healthy, and we need someone of equivalent quality to Shaun P on the other side. It is something our D sorely lacks, which is probably why we have a hard time getting off the field on 3rd down. Surely has to be a top priority in the next draft and free agency.

Going back to it, here's how I think we could run a 4-3 now

    DE - ?
    DT - Liuget/Martin
    DT - Garay/Thomas
    DE - Phillips/Barnes
    OLB - Spikes/Mouton
    ILB - Butler/? (Mouton?)
    OLB - ?(butler?)/?

The Chargers would need maybe a real ILB depending and another DE but that could be done fairly easily in FA, lot of DE options. Plus we could trade some of our players like a Castillo to try and acquire a DE

If he could stay off the IR, English should be a better DE than OLB.

Ant, don't you think SP is a bit small to play DE?

Spikes on the outside? I would put Butler on the outside and leave Spikes inside.

Glad you put that smiley next to Williams. He wants to play OLB in Wade's 3-4. Doubt that he's going anywhere.

I also believe that we will finally see Jammer at safety for 2012. This draft is crap for safeties, but you may see another CB picked.

TJ McDonald is a solid pick out for USC..

He can be rather too aggressive at times but we need aggression at that position.. some of his tackling needs to be improved, decent in coverage need that to improve too.. this was last years tape so..

This season we have struggled against both the run and getting a decent pass rush, clearly the 3-4 isn't getting it done.

With the emergence of Donald Butler as a true player of the future and possibly a piece to build the defence around, how does the switch to a 4-3 defence sound to fit our defence around arguably our best defensive player of the future? We've got piece for our d-line rotation, with Garay and Thomas to play nose tackle, Castillo, Liuget, Tommie Harris to play undertackle. Travis Laboy, Shaun Phillips and Antwaan Barnes, hell maybe even Larry English will show us why he was a 1st round pick, to play DE as they all did in college. Spikes played weak side line backer in Philly, we would need to pick up a strong side backer and depth at backer position overall in free-agency and draft.

    What do you think?

The 3-4 isn't getting it done because we lack quality players along the front 7, something that won't change by switching to a 4-3. No matter what defense we run, we need better players

Our biggest weakness is LB, they are the heart and soul of the 3-4. Switching to the 4-3 allows us to mitigate that as we have the big bodies we need on the line to have a decent 4-3 DL. that would allow us to focus on LB and CB in the draft and FA.

Besides our weakness is being run on up the gut, guess what... That is the weakness of 3-4 as well.

When we lost Jamal our 3-4 scheme was in trouble! Without a dominate nose tackle the 3-4 won't work. Without a dominate middle linebacker the 4-3 won't work.

I'd consider LB'ers that would tackle their own mothers if they were running the football in the beef section on the NFL shopping list.
