Talks between San Diego, Chargers are all but dead

As NFL owners prepare to meet in Chicago to discuss the inevitable return of pro football to Los Angeles (sorry, L.A. Kiss, but you’ve had two years to prove that you’re playing pro football — and you’re not), it’s looking less and less likely that pro football will stay in San Diego.

Via Kevin Acee of U-T San Diego, local politicians have “all but abandoned” hope of working out a deal with the Chargers in 2015.

And so the Chargers will continue to pursue options in Los Angeles, with San Diego becoming the Plan B.

But if two teams are going to move to L.A., it’s hard to imagine the Chargers not being one of them. And if the Chargers aren’t going to move to L.A., it’s hard to imagine the Chargers tolerating the Raiders and Rams moving right down the road, 20 years after both franchises left California.

Still, without significant taxpayer money, it will be difficult if not impossible to pay for two different stadiums for two different teams in Southern California. So it will be two teams in L.A. (more likely) or two in San Diego (highly unlikely).

That’s the simplest way to look at this. A new stadium won’t be built in L.A. unless two teams play there, and cramming three teams into a region that has had only one for two decades will be a tough sell — especially with no blackout rule to cajole fans to buy tickets.

I remain convinced that The Spanos Family will be looking to sell the Team within two or three years of their relocation to the L.A market. Neither Spanos nor Davis have the business "savvy" for a metropolis like L.A.

I just heard the Chargers think they have found a spot for a stadium, but the city is going to have to move the convention center out of the way...

    Cheerful aren't we?

St. Louis and San Diego are the only cities actually trying to build stadiums. Oakland is jerking off after losing the Warriors (who the F loses a world champion right after they win the title??) That's gotta count for something.

My hope: that the NFL delays the move to LA for 1 year sending every team back to negotiate with their respective cities (not because they want them to stay but because they want one of them to get a new stadium where they are)

What I think will happen: Chargers (playing the role of the clippers) and Rams in Inglewood (maybe Rams in 2016 and Chargers in 2017/18)

My worst nightmare: Chargers in St. Louis or San Antonio, Raiders in San Diego (I said my WORST nightmare)

My worst (more realistic nightmare): Chargers and Raiders in Canton

Chargers are going to LA. Funny to watch NFL network, Analyst talking about LA situation and todays meetings, they show renderings from Inglewood, and Carson. "San Diego making little progress, but a lot of roadblocks, St Louis making a little more progress, with some road blocks.". No mention of anything St. louis is doing, (only people in St. louis know) no mention of SD hiring a well respected negotiating team, and architect, nor showing the SD stadium renderings, or about completeing 6,000 page EIR meeting demanding deadlines, (weather it is or isn't legally defensible), no mention of the SD city, county, and city attorney all united for a once. NFL controlling the national narrative, they want two teams badly in LA, and will make it happen, and ensure they succeed, this aint your Daddys NFL. Oakland will get some money to help build a modest stadium in Oakland. Chargers and Rams in LA, follow the money, Spanos family is only interested in increasing their networth, and teams value.

Personally I think Spanos can go f** himself. He's proven to me that there aren't many bigger turds in America than him... except for maybe Donald Trump.

I still don't know what I'm gonna do WHEN the Chargers leave.

I do live 2 hours from Seattle, so I could adopt the Seahawks, that would be a nice little upgrade. But there is no way I'll ever be able to muster the same enthusiasm.

I believe something happens last minute or otherwise that keeps the bolts playing in SD, but then again I love the taste of the kool-aid. I don't blame them for playing hardball because at this point that is exactly what is needed. Eminent chance of leaving, or seriousness of keeping them is what the fans need to shout out about. IMHO you either support whatever measures are needed to keep them, or you sit back and watch them leave. Yes I know, a lot of political and financial issues hang over head, but plain and and simple, as fans, how much and how far are we willing to go to keep them?
Since I am no longer a resident (RIP) I do not have the vote or input of many on here but love to discuss both sides.

For years, when it came it to the stadium issue, I always had sympathy for the team because it seemed like the local government was being extremely unsupportive in terms of pushing for a new stadium when it had an owner that was patiently waiting for years.

What is amazing to me at this point is just how much the good guy/bad guy roles have flipped in this mater. I am wondering if that is the perception that the rest of you guys have.

Now, the local government is trying very hard to keep the team and the team is not dealing in good faith.

While I admit that my review of the CEQA laws and regulations was brief, I think it was enough to let me know that Fabiani is not acting in good faith when he states with such certainty that the City's environmental review process will eventually be declared illegal.

Because the laws/regulations are broadly worded, I agree with Fabiani's assertion that legal challenges may be made, but I think that at the end of the day the City's legal position is the one that is most likely correct.

I am not suggesting that it is a slam dunk for the City in litigation, but Fabiani's use of the words "is eventually declared illegal" suggests that the law clearly is against the City's position such that it is a slam dunk the other way. That is just flat out false.

To me, when the team's attorney is taking this kind of extreme position, it is very, very clear that the team does not want to reach an agreement with the City and that the team is attempting to hide its true wishes by blaming the City in an effort not to look bad.

As for me, no matter where the Chargers are, I will be a Chargers fan to the day I die. But while I realize that one of the benefits of being a team's owner is the right to decide courses of action for the team and I do not dispute that right, that doesn't mean that I have to like it when the team has a chance to get a new stadium in the same place where the team was an integral part in the creation of so many memories for myself, and I am sure for many of you guys too, and the team's owner and attorney turn their noses up at that possibility as if it were last week's leftover dinner.

Maybe I am just being overly sentimental, but my team is the San Diego Chargers and their home is in Mission Valley in San Diego and it saddens me to think of it any other way.

Do we need BOTH.. NO do we need ALL 3!! Why are we REACTIVE instead be PRO active!! Why try to solve ONE problem (the football stadium).. We need 3 things here in San Diego AND the cost can be split with the CASINOS flipping for 50% of the bill!

Options for a NEW football stadium:

    · First off (WE) San Diego is being re-active to the football stadium! We asked for a stadium-the Chargers asked for a stadium 3-4 years ago, and NO body budged! NOW that there is a threat of losing the Chargers we are reacting!

    · So, Option 1-The team doesn't get a realistic good deal so they move to LA-Carson.

    · Option 2-reconstruct Mission Valley: Advantages:

    1. Lease costly- there is already pre built construction.

    2. It's centrally located.

    3. It's the quickest solution.

    Disadvantages:

    1. The traffic around there is already crazy, even on NON-Game events.

    2. It's a band-aid because out of 4-5 locations, it's the worse for a new stadium.

    3. We need a new convention center AND airport! We keep putting band-aids on these items, but the truth is we NEED ALL 3 of these venues. (if we are going to continue to grow!) We should be proactive and build ALL 3 of these necessities! Especially the football stadium AND the convention center!

    4. look at #1!

    · Option 3 & 4-Chula Vista & Oceanside-both viable, but expensive!

    · Option 5-Noone has brought this up, but not only does the Indian Reservation have A LOT of land, they probably would love to have you build on it! I have a suspicion that they would pay for 50% of this.

    A. with ALL the land they have, we can build a new stadium, an airport with TWO runways, (LA has 4-5 airports in their surrounding area) AND a new convention center.

    B. The casinos can be allowed to build new hotels & resorts (80% of their own and 20% others).

    C. this would create mass transit from San Diego to the Indian Reservation-Casinos.

    D. This would create a TON of jobs!

    E. This would alleviate traffic congestion.

    F. the BEST ways to build a city AND bring more money to a city is: 1. Out of country $$(from individuals flying into San Diego, for gambling, & visiting.) 2. Out of state $$ (from individuals flying into San Diego, for gambling, & visiting.) 3. Out of city $$ (from individuals flying into San Diego, for gambling, & visiting.)

    G. (being repetitive) The casino-reservation would put up 50% of the money for this project NOT the citizens!! With 50% of the money put up by the reservation-casinos-we can afford tickets AND food at the game!

YOU said: "Now, the local government is trying very hard to keep the team and the team is not dealing in good faith." The team was suggesting SINCE 2009 will you please build a NEW stadium AND the city said-all you need is to REBUILD where AND what you have. Eventually, you will have the attitude that the owners of the Chargers have. I agreed with YOU at first and did the research through past articles and bumped into the FACT the Owners of the Chargers tried to be nice, but how many times can you REBUILD a broken poorly located stadium? If you're running a business, then you don't wait as long as the Spanos have waited. OVER 6 years. come on, do you really think they are that dis-genuine?? Maybe politicians might be!!
