    The Tank is cut

CHICAGO -- The Bears waived troubled defensive tackle Tank Johnson on Monday after he was pulled over for speeding in Arizona last Friday.

Johnson already is suspended for the first eight games of the 2007 NFl sason after violating probation on a gun violation.

"We are upset and embarrassed by Tank's actions last week," Bears general manager Jerry Angelo said.

"He compromised the credibility of our organization. We made it clear to him that he had no room for error. Our goal was to help someone through a difficult period in his life, but the effort needs to come from both sides. It didn't and we have decided to move on."

Police in the Phoenix suburb of Gilbert said Johnson was stopped for driving 40 mph in a 25 mph zone at 3:30 a.m. Friday and the officer made observations that led him to believe Johnson was impaired.

Sgt. Andrew Duncan, a police spokesman, said Johnson was arrested for "DUI Impaired to the Slightest Degree" but was released without being booked or charged.

Duncan said Johnson was taken to the Gilbert police station, where officials drew blood for a blood-alcohol content test before his release. He described Johnson as "very cooperative."

The officer had probable cause to make an arrest, Duncan said. Test results aren't expected for up to two weeks, and they would be sent to Gilbert town prosecutors for consideration of any charges.

A lot of teams, who value talents over character, would take him right now.

And if this comes back over the limit and a DUI charge is filed, that suspension will go full year.

I wonder if he's with the broncos, does his suspension get "magically" reduced to 4 games (which he can serve during preseason)? :icon_shrug:

The bad thing is either the donks or raters will sign him now. They love guys like this. Character is everything to these teams. The worse the character the better they like the kid.

From what I've read about the donks. They like to get troubled players cause they can threaten them to make them work harder.

He will get a full year suspensio, so there is no reason to sign until next offseason. Let's see if he stays clean for the whole year, then we can entertain the Flavor of the Day topic on him.

If I may play Devil's advocate: What if the tests show that Johnson was under the legal limit? Haven't you guys ever gone 40 in a 25 MPH zone?

My last traffic ticket was in a speed trap, saw the motorcycle cop 100 yards in front of me, basically coasted past him, and he got me for doing 35 in a 25.

Just my opinion, but it seems like a pretty harsh stance for the Bear organization to take, deciding not to wait for the test results.

I thought of them, too, but there all ready on notice that if they even sniff someone like the Tank they'll get fined. The Raiders are apparently well enough coached not to get caught. Then again, the Bay Area is a good deal more tolerant of high spirits than the more up tight places where they grown things like corn or Gila Monsters.

you should probably see this as the straw that broke the camel's back - Tank had plenty of heavy duty problems that when he did something small that was finally enough for the Bears.

NOt only that but the dude was out partying past 3am... it's like Bill Cosby says, nothing good can happen to you after midnight (on the street). The smart ones are in bed by midnight... like LT (I think I read he's in bed every night by 9pm?)

I hear what you and mandude are saying. I'm just wary of how far this "good conduct" policy can go.

If it is proven that Tank Johnson WASN'T impaired, then this amounts to a very minor traffic violation, regardless of the time of day.

but its not in the middle of the day on the highway to some overzealous cop, it was still a DUI late at night after he had been partying. I think the Bears would have shrugged if it was the former, since it was the latter and Johnson had said basically like Pacman that he would reform his ways and not go out partying with his crew, the Bears just had had enough.

In all honesty I give lots of kudos to the bears for not taking this crap anymore.

You're probably right, Ant. I'm guessing that Johnson told the Bears that he'd basically be a Boy Scout, never go out late at night, etc.

And that's why they didn't need to wait for the DUI results.
