Matthew Tant was just hoping to be noticed when he went to the San Diego Chargers mini-camp earlier this month.

    Mission accomplished.

The former Vanderbilt fullback, who was signed this spring as an undrafted free agent, caught the attention of veteran Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer. The 5-10, 230-pound Tant hopes to make the team when training camp opens in July.

"Tant doesn't have the ideal size of a fullback, but he's shown foot agility and quickness," Schottenheimer told Chargers.com.

Tant, a graduate of Harpeth High, bypassed his senior season at Vanderbilt in 2005 to enter this year's draft. He was not drafted but quickly signed a free-agent deal with San Diego, which finished 12-4 last season and advanced to the playoffs.

Tant, mostly a blocking back, rushed for 109 yards on 26 carries for Vanderbilt last season. Running back Ray Perkins of Southeast Louisiana, also an undrafted free agent, impressed Schottenheimer during the Chargers' mini-camp.
