Good read.... Norval Eugene "Norv" Turner article from Chargers.com

TBF's Notable from the article are...

Nobody missed this one. During the game, I saw some great plays and some, "What the hell was that" plays... Staying healthy is what it's all about. We will have a complete overhaul of our staters from this year to last. The only way these guys are going to get better is via reps, reps, and more damn reps. If they can't practice due to boo-boos then they're not getting reps. DRINK MORE MILK!

I sure hope he makes the team, I love this kid. From my seats in front of my ****** TV, he looked like he has been training, practicing, and focusing on this very game since the doctor cleared him. He looked very determined and sure of himself the entire game. In looking at our RB situation, it shouldn't be much different then the 2005 season.

    LT-All in.
    Turner-All in.
    Neal-All in.
Pinnock-Can't catch a lick, but the only back up at FB (with the bonus of being a capable RB as well).
Sproles-???? Does his kick returning ability give him a legit shot at making the team? If he finds a seam while returning, he could be very, very dangerous. Does he bump Turner at kickoffs?

I SAY YES! I think he is good enough to return punts and KO's...For me, having a starting WR, or 2nd string RB doing these jobs is kinda scary... Returning kicks was where I got tore up the most playing football. Sproles is great to have, but if he gets injured he is kinda expendable...I know that sounds ******, but it's true...

All you want to know about Coach Norval Eugene "Norv" Turner

I will wait til the opposition turns the dial up, and wait to see some consistency before I push my chips to the center of the table on Sproles. I just don't see it. He had a good game. It was a preseason game, the first one in 8 months. Most of what he did was against second stringers.

Some of you are over reacting about his performance, especially after reading about his botching punts in practice last week. Let's get through a few games so that we have a body of work before anointing Sproles as "the next big thing".

I tendta agree with you here...the telling part of Norv's comments is that Sproles hasn't missed a practice since March, exponentially putting him ahead of some that have missed time on the field due to nagging injuries. Norv laments the time VJ, Buster, et al have missed in comparison.

I hear you...! Good argument, but my current money is on him making the sqaud.

So, you guys are now willing to admit that Sproles makes the team if he has several more good preseason games?

Given those circumstances Slug, I don't see how he can't make the squad :icon_shrug: :icon_huh:

Well, that's certainly a shift from just last week, before the game, when most people here said "Sproles is gone", pretty much no matter what he did in preseason.

    I just reread your post...

I'm by no means annoiting him anything other then a 3rd string back and possibly a very valuable assest on returns...

He is faster, quicker, more agile then any other returner we have...Problem is, if you hit him, he is going down, he won't break many tackles and the fact that he is so damn small makes him injury prone in an occupantion (return guy) that is very football dangerous.

I like him because it takes a starter or second string guy out of that role. Sproles is nothing more then a very good specialist.

I'm wondering how this compares you think to the SDUT board which is reporting that the defense and other parts of the team are losing respect rapidly for turner

Who on the UT board says the players are, "losing respect for Turner?" Is that their opinion or are they citing a source?

Yes, he "heard it through the grapevine, on good authority."

Hearing something through the grapevine means you heard it from someone who heard it from someone who heard it from someone. I don't know how that constitutes a "good authority."

Yeah. The only true "good authority" is getting it directly (and often quoted) from one of the coaches or players.

Sproles may be short, but he is 180 lbs. of muscle that can bench almost 400 and is very quick and elusive. His career in the Big 12 was replete with broken tackles and tough inside runs. He never suffered a major injury or even one serious enough to hamper his performance. I'll say it again. The only thing that keeps him off this team is inconsistent fielding of KO's and P's, a fault that will prevent him from getting the kind of quick jump that makes him so dangerous. He field's the ball cleanly and controls, then the team would be foolish to cut him.

I guess we don't have Ray Perkins anymore?

He looked good during the preseason last year.

Cam Cameron scooped him up when he went to the Dolphins.

    Go figure.

180 pounds is 180 pounds...The guy isn't running anyone on an NFL field over...Now, he doesn't necessarily need to run anyone over, he is looking for gaps and holes. But, he does get hit pretty damn hard because he is usually out weighed by 30+ pounds.

I hear you, and love this guy...But, the fact is, the NFL is made up of the top 1% of college football players. Everytime you step on an NFL field, it's a damn allstar game. Many, many people have been terrific college players...Not so with the NFL comparitively...

I know he had problems with fielding punts. But, I have not heard the same for KO's.

To make the roster, I think he has to be able to handle both-for reasons of numbers if nothing else. There are plenty of returners who are taller than Sproles who go into the 180-200 pound slot. Billy White Shoes was one. How much does Parker weigh? 180, and he returns on ST's from time to time. The Burner is a different case. He's the biggest returner I've ever heard of. Gordon is 197, Gregory is 187. You make the valid point that he won't be running anyone over. When you are returning punts and KO's the last thing you want to do is to try and run someone over. The other guys are hunting your head like a trophy because getting it is big brownie points. I know this. From sad experience. Cromartie would be seeking open ground as well if was returning the ball. To do otherwise would be just plain dumb. There is a saying among pilots, "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots". No matter who gets the rock, the object is to find a seam, not knock someones wienie in the dirt. That's what all the other guys are supposed to do for you.

When it comes to Sporles, I'm just going to sit back and watch the show. I don't necessarily have a desire for him to make the team or not.

In the past, we could afford to keep any good player, and we could always make room, because we didn't have that many. This year is going to be tough to get all our good guys. Someone who should stay is going to have to go, so we can all start getting use to that idea that is going to happen.
