The Chargers would love it if one of their draft picks this week never plays a significant snap for them.
They are, of course, willing to spend considerable resources teaching the player, getting him ready under the direction of one of the game’s most knowledgeable coaches and also one of the NFL’s best players at his position.
Then in four years they could trade him to another team for the right to move up 20 spots in the 2014 Draft and pocket an extra pick in the ’15 draft. For all the grooming the Chargers did, the player would sign a nice contract with his new team, and everyone would live happily ever after.
“Now you’re getting into fairy tales,” General Manager A.J. Smith said last week when presented with the scenario.
Except it already happened over the course of the past four years.
The Chargers selected quarterback Charlie Whitehurst out of Clemson in the third round in 2006. He never threw a pass in a regular-season game, didn’t even get in a game his final three seasons with the Chargers. And then last month, with Whitehurst a restricted free agent, the Seattle Seahawks signed him to a two-year, $8 million contract and compensated the Chargers with draft picks (swapping second-rounders this year, to No. 40 from No. 60, and giving the Chargers a third-rounder in 2011).
It is unlikely, given their other needs, not to mention that they have franchise quarterback Philip Rivers and backup Billy Volek, that the Chargers would take a flier on a quarterback as high as the third round this week, but Saturday will almost certainly see them call the name of a college QB.
The 2010 class of quarterbacks is considered relatively weak in terms of elite, ready-to-play talent, but the Chargers will be drafting purely a developmental player. And with QB guru Norv Turner as head coach, Rivers and Volek, plus quarterbacks coach John Ramsdell, who has also mentored Kurt Warner, the rookie would have a good chance of developing.
“With those two guys and Ramsdell in the room,” Turner said, “it’s a great situation for a young guy.”
Rivers, who loves college football and follows the draft, said he hasn’t done much research or talked potential quarterback draftees with Turner or Ramsdell. But as soon as the pick is announced, Rivers said, the new guy “will get YouTubed.”
Depending on where the Chargers draft this project, they could be interested in Fordham’s John Skelton, Troy’s Levi Brown, Tennessee’s Jonathan Crompton, Northwestern’s Mike Kafka, Oregon State’s Sean Canfield or any number of others.
Turner said there is not a certain kind of passer the Chargers are looking for, nor is there a prescription on where a good one will be found.
“The past 10 years have proven you can find quarterbacks in all different venues — the Arena League, NFL Europe or the sixth round of the draft,” Turner said.
Turner, who despite the knocks on his ability as a head coach is widely respected for his work with quarterbacks, said the Chargers “are looking for a guy who can be a starter in this league.”
But unless disaster strikes, he will never start for the Chargers.
It is not even likely the quarterback will be the backup here, as Smith has shown he prefers to have a veteran in the No. 2 spot. In 2006, Whitehurst was the backup for two games until the Chargers traded for Volek. They re-signed Volek to a lucrative (for a backup) three-year deal before the ’08 season and would likely bring him back again after this season if Volek so chooses.
But that certainly doesn’t mean the Chargers won’t get anything out of the guy they draft.
Whitehurst spent three years relaying Turner’s play calls to Rivers. Turner said that might change in the short term, but being involved that way was a good learning tool for Whitehurst and would be for the new third QB.
The young quarterback provides insurance, and the policy could pay off at the end.
“First, you get the player,” Turner said. “Charlie was here and around for us. We got his services during that period of time. And if during that time, someone sees the player as being an option for them … .”

    Tebow in the 4th?

We can use him as a TE/H back and train him as qb. Then if Rivers gets injured we have another backup but also in 4 years trade plus we had an extra TE

Tebow has been very clear that he wants to play QB. I doubt he has much success at another position unless he actually accepts his role in another position, which it doesn't sound like he has/will

It would be excruciatingly funny if he gets drafted in the first at some other position!! imagine in prime time, tebow called up as TE...

"With the 11th pick in the NFL draft, the Denver Broncos select Tim Tebow, TE university of Florida"

BTW, His GF has insanely large tits for her body!

This idea is predicated on Tebow being available in the 4th round? :icon_rofl:

This is pretty much a great time to draft a qb, when we don't have a pressing need and we have all the time in the world to let him ride the pine and learn behind a pro bowler.
