SAN FRANCISCO -- General Manager Kevin Towers said No. 2 catcher Michael Barrett will be out from two to eight weeks because of a sprained elbow, that newly promoted Colt Morton will get a spot start or two for Josh Bard and that veteran Damian Miller is on the club's radar.

Barrett's MRI exam yesterday revealed 1 millimeter of laxity in the ulnar collateral ligament, Towers said. Had the ligament been stretched 1.5 to 2 millimeters, surgery might have been necessary, but Towers said "the hope" is that Barrett, 31, will respond well to rest and strengthening exercises.

The most likely scenario is that Barrett will need 6-8 weeks to return, manager Bud Black said, but Towers said the injury could be nerve-related and if so Barrett could be back when he is eligible to come off the disabled list, April 24.

Monday, Barrett left the game in the sixth inning after struggling repeatedly to throw the ball to pitcher Greg Maddux and to second base in warm-ups. He was in "great pain" afterward, Towers said.

Fears that Barrett had a damaged elbow ligament increased following a stress test, administered by a Giants doctor. Towers and Black said the good news from yesterday's exams was that Barrett might have had a similar injury previously. "Our doctors thought he might have reaggravated an old injury," Towers said.

According to Towers, Morton, the starting catcher in Double-A, was promoted instead of Triple-A catcher Nick Hundley because moving Hundley onto the active roster would have meant removing someone from the 40-man roster. He also cited Morton's experience with the Padres last season, when the roster expansion allowed Morton to spend the final 27 days with the club. He appeared in one game, flying out as a pinch hitter.

Towers said the club yesterday contacted the agent for Miller, 38, who caught in 56 games with the Brewers last season, then went unsigned. A right-handed batter, Miller is a career .262 hitter who reputedly excels at directing pitchers. "I've always liked him," Towers said.

Miller, among others, could be an option in 2-3 weeks, Towers said, if Barrett's recovery stalls and it is decided Morton needs regular playing time. As a thrower, Morton regularly clocked at the major league average in spring training. He was a .240 career hitter in the minors. In spring training, he hit two three-run home runs, one in an intrasquad game.

At 6-foot-5, Morton presents a big target,Towers said, but he is so large there is concern that "hitters can get a feel for" the intended pitch location.

    Notes

Black said Mark Prior threw a full batting practice session yesterday, his first such outing since the one six days earlier, which was ended halfway through by shoulder tightness. Black said Prior likely will pitch in a simulated game within two weeks.

With 11 strikeouts in a game for Triple-A Portland, Wade LeBlanc tied a franchise record shared by former Padres Oliver Perez and Steve Watkins.

We're not going to get Pudge as a back up catcher.

While Towers is at it, have him find a Centerfielder.
