    Chargers will take the fourth

The Chargers are 3-for-4 on fourth-down tries this preseason.
That’s just six fewer such attempts than they had all last season, and it is probably a precursor of things to come when they are 10 to 20 yards inside opposing territory.
“When it is fourth-and-3, fourth-and-4 and fourth-and-5, I think you will see us going for it more in that situation because we are good in that down and distance,” Turner said. “We are very good at punting them down in there. (But) if it is where we think we can get another set of downs and go for it … it is really a third-down type conversion. That’s a down and distance we were pretty good in.”
Last season, the Chargers were 44-for-80 on third-down attempts of five or fewer yards and 5-of-8 on fourth-down tries of the same distance.
With punter Mike Scifres excelling at the type of high, sometimes knuckling punts that can be downed inside the 5, the Chargers will still punt on occasion when around the opponents’ 40. But they believe with their offensive weapons they can effectively extend drives too.

As much as anything, though, it’s a change in attitude.
“I know we have worked hard in the spring,” Turner said. “We have ended almost every period we’ve had in the spring and in this camp with a fourth down situation. … So, it has kind of created a mindset where if we are going to be in those situations, it is going to be advantageous for us.
" … So if we feel really good about who we are playing and the circumstance, then it is an opportunity to get a touchdown or get down in there and get an easier field goal.”

The Chargers ranked 14th in rushing attempts in 2009 but had more runs up the middle than all but three teams.
While Ryan Mathews has shown the ability to churn his legs through a pile, the rookie has been most impressive when bouncing outside. Of his 19 runs, excluding the two inside the 5-yard line, Mathews has taken eight outside, amassing 63 of his 101 yards.
“We have gotten outside more than we did a year ago,” Turner said. “I don’t know if it is because Ryan is faster, teams aren’t prepared for what we are doing or we are blocking it better. It doesn’t really matter to me, but he does have outstanding speed. One of the things we want to do in everything we are doing is make defenses defend the entire width of the field. We feel if we can do that, then it will widen their ends a bit and will help our inside running.”
On 137 of their 238 outside runs (57.5 percent) in ‘09, the Chargers gained three or fewer yards. They gained more than seven yards on just 18 percent of those runs. Mathews has gained more than seven yards on five of his eight outside runs and less than four yards just once.

I'm sure (?) there is a good reason you posted that in this thread...but it isn't doing wonders for my digestion.

Anyway...back on topic, if we do have a 3rd and short or a 4th and short situation it will be nice to not see a back run up the middle, bounce off and lose yardage. If this team can sustain drives life is going to be a whole lot better this season.
