Day Two: What's happening with the Chargers

    By Kevin Acee

    8:21 a.m., July 27, 2011

    First up, Eric Weddle.

    Then perhaps everything else.

While it is unlikely the Chargers can wrap up all their targeted transactions today, they'll give it a shot.

Already this morning, they have gotten down to business with Weddle's agent, and negotiations are expected to intensify quickly

While it might not be the first deal to get done, signing the free agent free safety is priority No.1 for the Chargers, and it is possible Weddle will be safely back in their secondary by day's end -- some $30 million richer and tied to the Chargers for at least four more seasons.

Yes, Weddle has other suitors, and these things can drag out. The market, in Weddle’s case, particularly, can have a significant affect on negotiations.

But negotiations in this tardy, truncated free agency period are being measured in hours instead of days.

While Weddle tops the list, he certainly is not the only player the Chargers need to lock down, and the team’s hope is be finished or close to finished with those dealings by tonight.

Kevin Burnett is seeking a rich deal – too rich for the Chargers and, according to people familiar with the price, too rich for any team at present. The Chargers greatly desire the inside linebacker to start next to newly acquired Takeo Spikes. But there will have to be a shift in the terms.

    • The Chargers and representatives of every player they drafted spoke on Tuesday, and those talks were roundly described as productive. Just one drafted player signed on Tuesday – Tampa Bay third-rounder Mason Foster, who was taken two spots after Vincent Brown, the Chargers’ third rounder. There really isn’t a lot of wiggle room with the new rookie salary structure, with guaranteed money being the only real negotiable aspect. Both sides – agents, especially -- were trying to figure out the new dynamics yesterday. Agents and league executives expect the draft pick dominoes to start falling quickly today.

    • The Chargers have a few other free agents they’re trying to keep – Antwan Barnes, Dante Hughes, Jacques Cesaire and Billy Volek among them -- and those offers have been given or will be shortly. There won’t be much, if any, negotiation for those deals.

    • Two players dear to many fans for their years of Chargers service remain unlikely to return. That has nothing to do with desire for a continued union on either side. Malcom Floyd and Darren Sproles would like to remain Chargers, and the Chargers would like to keep them. However, with all the machinations it must make, the team feels it can (has to) move on without the wide receiver and running back. Both players have deals working with other teams. For one or both to return, it would take them accepting less money and the Chargers finding money – perhaps if Burnett or Weddle do not re-sign.

Burnett seems to be trying to cash in big time. Can't blame him but he might not be signed by anyone til later. If that's the case he could be in big trouble if butler comes on like crazy

Burnett had a very good, but not great year last year. And he is only a couple years out of a bad neck injury. He is not gonna be paid huge money. Give him 4 years 28 million and tell him to shut it. Love the guy but you cant break a teams budget as a good player.

    Weddle and Chargers agree

    By Kevin Acee

    9:34 a.m., July 27, 2011

The Chargers and free safety Eric Weddle have agreed to terms.

Negotiations began Tuesday and intensified early this morning, with the deal being agreed to in just a couple hours.

The team had maintained all along that it would be more than fair to the player it believes has Pro Bowl potential. And Weddle said several times he wanted to stay with the team that drafted him in 2007 and the teammates he said would be his “best buddies forever.”

The market for Weddle began to grow in February, and interest from Jacksonville, Houston and Texas provided the only question of whether Weddle would remain a Charger.

But the Chargers brass went home Monday confident Weddle would like their pitch.

The 26-year-old Weddle, who the Chargers loved enough to move up 22 spots for the right to select him 38th overall in ’07, has started 48 of the Chargers’ past 51 games. He started all 16 games in 2010, a season in which he emerged as a leader on the defense.

The Chargers believe Weddle is on the verge of stardom, as he has improved each year and will perhaps be surrounded by his strongest cast on defense in 2011. Weddle made two interceptions in the final six games, including one against Indianapolis that he returned 41 yards for his second career touchdown.

Moreover, he has been in position for several more game-changing plays that the Chargers expect him to actually make in the future.

I read where Weddle is now the highest paid safety in the NFL.

VJ in the fold come Friday, Weddle signed, Clarey on board, Takeo Spikes to bring along the youngsters and put some attitude on the field. So far I like what has happened. I suspect that Burnett won't get a mega deal in this compacted signing period. I would like to see him signed as well. There are that many really good teams that will pay him big bucks and a chance to win big here could bring him around. If Cooper and Siler both go, we'll need him. Training time is short and we need depth to cover injuries.
